Tootsie Roll Industries is a candy and confectionery fabrication company based in Chicago, Illinois. It is one of the largest candy manufacturers in the U.S., and manufactures some of the best candies in the world.
History
Tootsie Roll Industries was founded in 1896 by Leo Hirshfield in New York City. Hirshfield was a confectioner born in Austria, and reached the U.S. as a migrant. The first store in New York City was a very small one, and he named it after his daughter, Clara, who was only 5 years old at that time. Tootsie was his daughter’s nickname. He designed and made many candies which were unique to his shop. He made a chewy, chocolate candy in an oblong shape and wrapped it separately. This candy became hugely popular.
The business became very successful, and the tiny shop became a huge manufacturing plant. Within 100 years, Tootsie Rolls became a multimillion dollar enterprise. It also started to supply its products outside the USA. It still uses the traditional recipe of Hirshfield today. It manufactures around 62 million candies every day. The Chicago manufacturing plant remains the main center of production. Following the success of Tootsie Rolls, it introduced Tootsie Pops in 1931. It became the largest selling lollipop in the world. In 2008, Tootsie pop drops were introduced, and they were available in 5 different flavors, chocolate, cherry, grape, blue raspberry and orange. In 2009, more flavors were introduced.
Over the years, it added more and more products to its product line and all of them became customer favorites. Moreover, Tootsie Roll Industries manufactures all its products in a nut free environment. It has also included gluten free candies in its product line.
Today, it makes $500 million profit a year. Over the years, it developed into one of the world’s most renowned candy manufacturers. Most of its products are also kosher certified.
