History
SweetWorks, Inc. was founded in 2002 when three confectioner companies merged to form one. The companies that merged were Niagara Chocolates, Whetstone Candy and Oak Leaf Confections. However, the owners of Niagara Chocolates (a candy company founded in 1956) are also the owners of SweetWorks, Inc.
In 1998, Canadian company Oak Leaf Confections was acquired by Philip Terranova. This company’s facility had an area of 148,000 square feet and employed about 240 employees at the time. Oak Leaf was engaged in the production of tablet gums, gumballs, jawbreakers and dextrose candy (pressed).
In 2002, some unique confectioner labels were acquired by Niagara Chocolate. The company’s distinctive processes contributed to its products being a hit in the national market. In the same year, SweetWorks, Incorporated was created as a parent company for all of these labels. Among the company’s nationally popular brands are Sixlets® (chocolate coated candies) and Ovation® (sticks covered with dark chocolate).
Currently, SweetWorks, Incorporated is a middle-sized company that is known in the U.S. market as a leader in producing premium chocolate products. The company’s products are sold in major supermarkets in the country, as well as in convenience stores, drug stores, warehouse clubs and bulk merchandisers in Canada and the United States. Aside from its own retail brands, SweetWorks accepts contract manufacturing for other companies. The company does contract manufacturing in its facilities located in Ontario and New York. The company currently has three candy manufacturing facilities and all of these facilities are wholly owned by the company
