facial-treatment-clear-lotionSK-II is a beauty brand that was launched in Japan in 1980. Apparently, SK-II is among the world’s most costly brands.

SK-II brand has been in the market for more than thirty years. In 1970, an observation was made by a scientist in Japan that women working in a Japanese sake brewery had very soft and youthful hands. This prompted intensive research that eventually led to the isolation and identification of a liquid called Pitera. This liquid was not only natural, but also rich in nutrients. The rights to this ingredient were acquired by the Japanese branch of Max Factor in 1980. Consequently, the first cosmetic product was made using Pitera. The product was named Max Factor Secret Key with Pitera, and was later rebranded to Max Factor SK-II.

Proctor and Gamble purchased Max Factor in 1981 and the focus shifted from Max Factor SK-II to SK-II cream. By 2000, the cream was one of the best selling cosmetic brands in Japan. The popularity of SK-II is still evident to this day. Since its inception, SK-II has delved into numerous markets. The Max Factor name is not used on the products marketed outside of Asia.

A major setback that the brand faced was its suspension in People’s Republic of China in 2006 following claims that it contained traces of toxic metals chromium and neodymium. Some of the countries where SK-II brand is sold include Hong Kong, Colombia, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, People’s Republic of China, Mexico, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Spain, United States, United Kingdom, and Thailand.
