Sharpham Park is one of the major farms in the UK. It is located in Somerset and produces a variety of organic products, most of which are made from organic spelt.
History
Sharpham Park has a wealth of history that dates back to the Bronze Age. Aside from being a farm, the site is a historic park with an area of about 300 acres. Sharpham Park is located close to the area of Glastonbury, Somerset.
In 1191, King John the First gave Sharpham Park to the Glastonbury Abbotts. The abbots owned the park until the monasteries were dissolved in 1539. Over the next hundred years, Sharpham Park was subjected to continual battle for ownership and control between noblemen. From 1539 until 1707, the park was under several owners, including Sir Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset; Elizabethan poet Sir Edward Dwyer; Longleat’s Thynne family; and novelist Henry Fielding.
When the Gould family could not produce an heir to inherit the property, the park was passed to the Earl of Cavan via through marriage. The earl then rented the estate to gentlemen farmers. In the 1830’s, the park’s chapel and original mansion were both pulled down. By 1890, Sharpham Park was heralded as one of Somerset’s best farms, growing a variety of products including wheat, as well as raising cattle and sheep. The farm was considered to be an important supplier of meat like beef, cattle and sheep, as well as dairy products and wheat.
Eventually, the farm became owned by Roger Saul, the founder of the business. Saul originally started an organic farm at the park when his sister Rosemary was diagnosed with stomach cancer and Saul was advised by Rosemary’s doctor to feed his sister spelt, a type of grain that is known to have beneficial digestive properties and is higher in protein than wheat. In 2004, Saul started an organic farming program, the focus of which is the production of organic spelt. The farming program has been a success and the company is now producing its flagship product, organic spelt products.
Over the years, the business steadily grew and Sharpham Park now has its own café and shop, aside from the Sharpham Park brand of retail food products. The farm itself has also evolved into an organic-mixed park, one that is suited to the modern world.
