History
James Gamble and William Procter were immigrants from the United Kingdom. William was a candle maker, while William was a soap maker. Together they formed a company in 1837, that manufactured both of these products. The company got a huge boost during the American civil war when it was contracted to supply soap and candles to the Union Army.
The demand for their products continued to increase and they were forced to build new factories in other parts of the country to meet the demand. The company also started looking at diversifying their products. With the popularity of radio growing, the company started sponsoring programs. These programs were later called soap operas because of their association with P&G.
P&G made a number of acquisitions that in turn allowed the company to venture into international markets. Some of their most recent acquisitions in the market include Gillette razors, Oral-B dental products, and Duracell. The company has also been involved in some notable sponsorship deals. The biggest so far has been the Tier 1 sponsorship deal of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The company sponsored about 150 athletes in the event.
