History

The history of PriceSmart dates back to 1976 when Sol and Robert Price founded Price Club. In 1993, there was a merger between Costco Wholesale Club and the Price Co. to form Price/Costco Inc. This name was later changed to Costco Wholesale Corporation. The company continued to grow and expand. For instance, in 1995, two club stores were opened by licensees in Guam and Micronesia. The first club store was opened by PriceSmart in Panama, while the licensees opened one club store in Indonesia.

The second club store of PriceSmart was opened in Panama in 1997. In the same year, two club stores were opened by licensees in Indonesia and China. In 1999, seven club stores were opened by PriceSmart in El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Panama, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Guatemala. Seven other PriceSmart club stores were opened in in Guatemala, Aruba, Trinidad, USVI, and two other stores in Philippines. The company’s growth and expansion is still ongoing. In 2011, one club store was opened in Colombia and two others in the years 2012 and 2013.
