Price Chopper, also known as FreshCo, is a Canadian discount-food store chain. This chain is owned and operated by Sobeys Incorporated.

History
There is no information regarding when Price Chopper Canada was really established. However, before being owned by Sobeys, Inc., the discount chain was owned by the Oshawa Group. The Oshawa Group is also a major food retailer in Canada.

Sobeys, Inc. was able to acquire some of Oshawa Group’s assets in November of 1998. After the acquisition, the Price Chopper chain acquired more locations in the country. On May of 2010, some Price Chopper stores in the areas of Mississauga and Brampton, Ontario were converted into FreshCo stores. FreshCo stores, like Price Chopper, aimed at providing multicultural, budget-conscious consumers with good quality products at very reasonable prices. A total of 87 Price Chopper stores were converted to FreshCo stores by Sobeys, Inc.

There are still a number of Price Chopper stores in the country. In fact, in the Atlantic part of Canada, there are Price Chopper stores in 19 cities, including Amherst, Bay Roberts, Burin Bay Arm, Chester, Fredericton, Glace Bay, Lewisporte, Stephenville, Sydney Mines and Torbay.

Every week, the stores publish flyers that highlight featured food items, as well as the stores’ weekly specials. The flyers come in a printer-friendly version and an electronic one. In order to view the online flyer and be updated with featured products and sales every week, all a customer has to do is sign up at the website. There have been a few problems with the stores’ flyers being un-viewable online. However, the store has addressed this problem by advising online visitors to clear their computer’s cache.

Aside from a number of national brands that are sold in the stores, Price Chopper also offers its products from its private label Compliments.

Price Chopper also offers gift cards starting at $25 and $50. These gift cards can be used at a Sobeys, Foodland or Price Chopper stores all throughout Canada. Some of the products that Price Chopper stores offer can also be viewed online. The Compliments line of products however, can be viewed from its own web site. Price Chopper stores also accept coupons. However, the store only accepts coupons that are directly from vendors.
