Bernie and Boys Market Joe Salle recently announced that the family’s business, Bernie and Boys Market, will be closing. Salle announced that although he wanted to keep the business up and running, they just could not afford it anymore, as they could not keep paying the bills.

Bernie and Boys Market was popular for being known as the ‘Live Butcher’s Home.’ Bernie, Joe’s father, was responsible for creating that title and popularized it throughout the whole region. When Bernie died, his son Tom then took over the title of butcher.

The business was started by Joe’s grandparents, which was then taken over by Bernie, who ran both the butcher shop and the grocery store. Over the years, Bernie and Boys Market have had a number of stores in different locations. However, in 16 years, the business had its main location in the vicinity of White Center.

In the last years, the business started losing sales but Joe and Tom were able to still keep it running. They were able to keep the 35 employees working for them for a period of time. However, customers continued to move away from their store and then the economic crisis hit, which ultimately worsened the market’s situation. They then started to get behind paying the bills until ultimately they have decided to close the store.

Tom Salle has said that in all his 51 years, all he has focused on is the butcher shop. Joe Salle said that the hardest part of closing their business is leaving a big hole in the neighborhood which used to shop at their store.

The Salle family plans to start again by opening a smaller retail store as soon as they are able to.
