History
The history of Monterey Gourmet Foods, Inc. traces back to 1989, when Monterey Pasta Company was founded in Monterey, California. Initially, the store was started as a 400-square foot facility. It was a small scale business making pasta, mostly handmade. The company also manufactured sauces with the help of food processors.
The pasta and sauces made by the company became very popular. During that time, people had started to use healthy foods in their diet. All the products were of very high quality, and the pasta was easy to prepare and was very nutritious, making it very popular among the customers. The company started getting requests from its customers to manufacture pasta in a variety of flavors and even supplied fresh crab to the company to make filled ravioli.
Due to an increase in demand, the company started expanding its facility. It became public in 1993 with the symbol PSTA. A new 10,000 square foot manufacturing plant was opened in Salinas, California which helped to increase production considerably. The company also introduced a new packaging technique, which kept the pasta fresher for longer and extended its shelf–life.
Today, the company supplies its products to 65 club stores and grocery stores including Kroger, Safeway, Albertson’s, and Raley’s. It has distribution centers in 6,600 locations and is the main supplier of Costco. It also distributes its products to Sam’s Club, which is a part of Wal-Mart. Moreover, it has international distribution centers in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan, and Korea.
Over the years, the company expanded its production facilities owing to tremendous increase in demand. It has manufacturing plants with over 130,000 square feet of area, and more than 350 people work in the factories. The company selected its markets carefully for its growth. The existing products were improved, and more products were introduced.
