Mitchell’s Gourmet Foods is a privately owned Canadian food manufacturing company headquartered in Saskatchewan, Canada.
History
The history of Mitchell’s Gourmet Foods began as far back as the 1800s with the Mendel family. During this time, the family had fifteen meat packing facilities in different parts of Europe. The family’s business focused on selling canned ham all throughout Europe under the Europa brand.
In 1936, Fred Mendel started the first of several packing facilities in Australia. He also introduced the Mayfair brand to the market. Four years later, due to growing tension in his homeland in Europe, Fred Mendel decided to abandon his business there. He then came to Canada and constructed a building in the area of Saskatchewan. He started a new company, Intercontinental Packers, which focused on canned hams aimed at the US market. In 1944, the company prepared significant quantities of luncheon meats designated for the UN Reliefs and Rehabilitation Agency. This was the company’s way of helping post-war Europe, as well as its refugees.
By 1950, Intercontinental Packers was ready to expand. With this, the company purchased Prairie Packers along with their Vancouver facility 1964. During this same period, a man named Fred Mitchell was also starting to learn the ropes of running a business engaged in meatpacking. Fred Mitchell was the grandson of Fred Mendel and was one of the fifth generation of Mendel’s who was exposed to the business. In 1976, Fred Mitchell was elected president of the company.
Under Mitchell’s leadership, the company continued its tradition of leadership, quality and commitment to its employees. Soon, Intercontinental Packers grew to be the biggest value-added meat (pork, specifically) processor in Canada. In 1986, Fred Mitchell introduced a new line of products to the market, the Mitchell’s Gourmet Food range.
Twelve years after, Intercontinental Packers officially became Mitchell’s Gourmet Foods. A yearlater, Mitchell’s and another food processing company, Schneider Corporation, entered into an agreement of strategic alliance and expansion. In 2001, Mitchell’s opened a new processing facility, called the McLeod Plant. This facility contained state-of-the-art equipment that allowed the company to continue and even improve its standards in pork processing. Today, Mitchell’s continues to thrive and its tradition of providing high-quality meat products still goes on.

What has happened to the quality control in your thick cut bacon??? It appears that greed is overtaking pride in product. We have found it very good in the past, so imagine my disappointment when I opened my latest package to find it full of large fatty sections. It looked like the cheapest value brand offerings. Not only that but when I looked closely, the slices had been rearranged so that the meatier portion was near the end and the big fatty part in the center where it was mostly hidden by the label. You could see the rearrangement line.. Very very disappointing . I’ll have to rethink buying your brand again. I did take photos if anyone at the company cares enough to try to remedy the problem.
At $25 a pkg, I was hoping for proper sliced bacon, instead the I got a kilo of mish -mash pieces, this is equivalent to a pkg of bacon ends! I’m not impressed
I am trying to find the Ingrediant list because my son has an anaphalactic food allergy and I need to know if these are safe for him to eat. Why is it so hard to find this information??? It is for the Mitchell’s gourmet wieners HELP!
You should be ashamed of yourselves. Canadians spending their hard earned money at such a horrible time. Your product is absolute garbage. I never buy a full ham so i can view the contents but made an exception with your product what a MISTAKE. Full of Gristle totally inedible what a waste of $12.99. Needless to say I will never buy your product again and I will warn everyone I know to be cautious of your products. Again you should be ashamed of yourselves.
Please close your business
The smoked ham was disgusting and inedible
I will never buy another Mitchell product again
I’ve been buying their Pepperoni because it had better flavor then grimms or any other brand……the last 4 packages that are sitting in my fridge are being taken back to get my money back…don’t know if they changed the recipe or just had a really bad batch but I almost puked the texture and the flavor was absolutely disgusting Will never buy this brand ever again.once bitten twice shy!!
I’ve been buying your bacon for several years because it was so meaty. I just opened a package bought at yesterday Walmart and basically it is a hunk of fat. Now I don’t know if you downgrade your quality control to accommodate a lower price point for Walmart, but if you do I suggest it is not a good idea because I expect a standard uniform product when I buy Mitchell. I will go buy a package of your bacon tomorrow at Co-op and see what that one looks like. I certainly hope it is up to the Mitchell standards.
Thank for allowing we to give you my 2 cents.
Just opened the package of Mitchell’s 1kg thick-sliced bacon and it was so fatty it was absolutely ridiculous. Very disappointing could not even serve this for breakfast. Pictures are available at your request.
Smoked ham was seriously with worst piece of so called ham I’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t even fed it to my boys.
I agree I will never buy this ham again It was full of gristle and fat
I just had the smoked ham I was so upset with how it turned out GROSS !!!! ☹️ …. I used to buy them a couple of years ago and they were great …. Now I don’t think I will waste my money ….
My family buys a lot of Mitchells products, and I mean a lot!!Due to the years, of the highest quality and taste.Because of the amount, our family, and extended family goes through.Occasionly, and I do say seldom…you may purchase an item, which doesn’t meet the highest level of Mitchells product standards! It happens. From packaging,to transport,to your store shelves, things can happen!I have been there. It’s unfortunate!1quick call to Mitchells, and your product will be replaced, and then some!No hassle,no excuses, period!!I will use, recommend and gift a Mitchells mouth watering product often. One year,we were severely reprimanded by my daughter and family.Waited until the last day before the holidays, and they were sold out!We substitued with a very good, expensive ham that was available!Well…we are still reminded early every year, just so they don’t end up with another brand!Did I mention Mitchell’s Bacon and sausage??You will not be disappointed! If for any reason that you are…Mitchell’s is not shy about sending you a refund. You really won’t need to, but if you do.A phone call away. Did I mention that I own a restaurant.I treat my customers like family members.
I purchased a package of your mitchell’s bacon. I always go though them to find a package that looks meaty and not all fat. The last 2 packages i purchased looked very nice, but upon opening them, after i removed the end slices from both sides the insides slices were mostly fat. You could tell the end slices were added as the cut of meat did not match the cut of the insides slices. So, I guess you are selling fatty bacon (which is costly) and just putting a very nice looking slice on the ends, so it gets purchased. I think this is a disgrace and i will be verbably telling everyone i know not to buy this product. I think this is discusting coming from a large company like yours.
