Meyer Natural Angus is a privately owned beef processing company located in Colorado, USA. The company takes pride in having the designation of a “Certified Humane” company, a designation by the Humane Farm Animal Care Program.

History
Meyer Natural Angus was started by one man, Robert Meyer, who settled in Powell County, CO, to begin his ranching business. In previous years, homesteaders first lived in the area of Helmville and made a living out of ranching, farming and mining.

During the 1900s until the 1940s,  Andrew Wales (an Irishman) and his family founded the Wales Brothers Park Ranch and started operating a lumber mill that successfully marketed purebred Percherons draft horses (registered). The Percherons were a hit with customers like farmers, ranchers and miners. In 1990,Wales Brothers Ranch (which had an area of approximately 6,000 acres), was the first land that to be purchased by Meyer.

Soon after, Meyer then bought The Company Ranch, a business that was established in the later part of the 1800s. This ranch engaged primarily in sheep operation. Meyer continued to buy more property as soon as it became available. The acquisitions resulted in the creation of Meyer Company Ranch, which became the biggest working ranch in the area.

In 1990, Meyer Company Ranch began to aggressively pursue the use of embryo transplants, as well as artificial insemination, to start a “Red Angus genetics” program. Meyer believed that solid genetics of a Red Angus would help the company achieve consistency when it came to meat production, and at the same time consistently produce high-quality beef.

Meyer believed that growing quality genetics and being a leader in the field of agriculture could not be obtained without having an ethical attitude, especially towards land and the animals. Meyer believes that a responsible stewardship of the land and the humane treatment of cattle would be good, both for the business and good for the environment. As a result of the company’s beliefs, it was given the designation of a certified-humane meat processing company by the Humane Farm Animal Care Program Standards.

When the roots of the Red Angus Genetics had been established, Meyer then built the foundation for an integrated beef program referred to as the Meyer Natural Angus. This program was devoted to growing Angus cattle without using any antibiotics or added hormones.
