Lidl is a German chain of discount supermarkets that has worldwide operations, including in the UK. The company has more than 9,000 stores in different parts of Europe and has its head offices in Livingston for its UK operations.
History
Lidl was created in the 1930s and was originally a wholesale grocery business. The business was started in Germany by the Schwarz family. The first store put up by the family was called “Schwarz Assorted Wholesale Foods.” The name Lidl was the surname of the Schwarz’ former partner in business, Ludwig Lidl and Schwarz bought the rights to the store’s name.
The first stores that were already named Lidl were opened in 1973. The stores had a similar concept with those of Aldi stores. By 1977, there were 33 discount stores in the country. All of these retail stores were kept as small as possible and products that did not sell were removed from the shelves. This system worked fine with its customers, which is why the number of Lidl stores grew.
By the 1980s, the stores had become a popular household name throughout Germany. By the 1990s, Lidl started its expansion plan by opening stores outside of the country. By 1994, Lidl retail stores were operating in the UK.
Currently, Lidl has over 580 stores throughout the United Kingdom and has become the closest competitor of Aldi in the area of discount retailing. Although Lidl in the UK is still considered a minor player in the retail industry (with a market share of more or less 5%), the discount chain is still thought of as one of the important retailers in UK.
Just like Aldi, a majority of the products sold in Lidl stores are private labels, which is why it offers really low prices for its products. Among the brands that Lidl owns are Silvercrest and FAIRGLOBE. The Silvercrest label is for electronic products, while the FAIRGLOBE label is for fair trade food products, which Lidl supports. Even with already having thousands of stores around Europe, Lidl continues to expand, as it still has plans to put up stores in countries like Canada and Mexico.

Aldi builds where its needed, LYDL only builds in yuppie areas. Thank You Aldi!
no they don’t, they are building one in Folsom Pa. hardly a yuppie area.
visiting greenville, sc from philadelphia,pa. loved the selection. can’t wait to see a store in my area, philly or surrounding counties.
Only way to compare any store to another is to put a store near a competitor within 1-2 miles from each other..then allow the customer decide their favorite..Aldi or is it Lidl
Youcan not compare the two Aldi and Lidl , different items but their bakery is really good ! Ans some says it is expensive then I suggest you go buy artisan bread at a local bakery 4 dollars and up ! I find the store cleaner than Aldi and the staff is very friendly. I would like to see a store in the Asheville area ! the more stores like this and it will drive the prices down . In Germany we have them all over the place and it is where most of us shop depending what items you are looking for.
I visited your store on mall drive in Richmond va. Your check out person had ear buds in his ears and was talking to someone while checking all of us out. Didn’t say thank you or greet us when we got to him. People in front of me in line we very unhappy. And I think he was very rude to do that. Cashier:27 at the store
Wow, I just found out about this store. We do have Aldi but I would love to see how different or the same this store is. I live in Satellite Beach, Florida. Please build one of these stores around my area.
I am from Overland Park, Kansas and visited your store in Virginia Beach, Virginia while visiting. I LOVE IT!! We are the center of the US and I really think this would be a GREAT location to get started in. How long before that might become real??
Does Lidl have a charitable giving program for 501 (c) (3) organizations
IDK What the hype is all about. Same stuff as Aldi only with an (overpriced) bakery. Aldi is cheaper and higher quality. Even the local Food Lion has cheaper stuff. Since grand opening the parking lot has been empty at Lidl. Waste of time

Today your Goose Creek store did not accept my credit on my bank card. There was no sign that credit was not accepted. The cashiers said it does that some time. What does that mean? I shopped there FEW WEKS AGO AND MY BANK. CARD WAS ACCEPTED WITH NO PROBLEM.. What does it mean that sometimes you accept and sometimes you don’t .What kind of deal os this. My card was fine .I shopped ay was-Mart in Moncks corner and Palmetto Seafood and Farm Supply in Moncks Corner before we Came to your store. We left with out our $50.00 almost purchase from your store. Then we went to pop eye’s and my card worked there,Then to Sam’s Club same card same credit not debit. Then back to Moncks Corner to the Piggly wiggly same bank card same credit. This is un acceptable and embarrassing….
It would be nice to know where products originated from Some tell but many do not.
