Lidl is a German chain of discount supermarkets that has worldwide operations, including in the UK. The company has more than 9,000 stores in different parts of Europe and has its head offices in Livingston for its UK operations.
History
Lidl was created in the 1930s and was originally a wholesale grocery business. The business was started in Germany by the Schwarz family. The first store put up by the family was called “Schwarz Assorted Wholesale Foods.” The name Lidl was the surname of the Schwarz’ former partner in business, Ludwig Lidl and Schwarz bought the rights to the store’s name.
The first stores that were already named Lidl were opened in 1973. The stores had a similar concept with those of Aldi stores. By 1977, there were 33 discount stores in the country. All of these retail stores were kept as small as possible and products that did not sell were removed from the shelves. This system worked fine with its customers, which is why the number of Lidl stores grew.
By the 1980s, the stores had become a popular household name throughout Germany. By the 1990s, Lidl started its expansion plan by opening stores outside of the country. By 1994, Lidl retail stores were operating in the UK.
Currently, Lidl has over 580 stores throughout the United Kingdom and has become the closest competitor of Aldi in the area of discount retailing. Although Lidl in the UK is still considered a minor player in the retail industry (with a market share of more or less 5%), the discount chain is still thought of as one of the important retailers in UK.
Just like Aldi, a majority of the products sold in Lidl stores are private labels, which is why it offers really low prices for its products. Among the brands that Lidl owns are Silvercrest and FAIRGLOBE. The Silvercrest label is for electronic products, while the FAIRGLOBE label is for fair trade food products, which Lidl supports. Even with already having thousands of stores around Europe, Lidl continues to expand, as it still has plans to put up stores in countries like Canada and Mexico.

Thanks for choosing Eden, North Carolina. Looking forward to your opening.
Coming to CLT soon!!!
what are the store hours for stores on east coast?
Welcome to Winston Salem North Carolina,!!!!!!!
I was reading a news story where the staff of Lidl where your staff considered lower income shoppers. As a lower income person,I was impressed by your thoughts of these people.. Too often, lower income people are disregarded with the assumption that we’ll settle for non quality products and service ,which is far from the truth. I know some of these same people who will bypass stores near them and will go miles to another because of the reasons I listed in previous lines of this paragraph. I’ve done ( and continue to ) do the same.Who can blame them?
Ive read where your corporation has plans to possibility put Lidl stores in the state of Georgia.Though your stores are fairly new to the United States, with an open mind ,I’m willing to give your stores a chance and from what I’ve read and seen on your website, your stores seem impressive. I don’t know if Lidl have thoughts about putting one of your stores in a lower income communities/
” undeserving ” areas but I’ve seen stores like Kroger ,Walmart and Aldi’s near some of these areas and have been there for a long time. I could be wrong, but if those stores are working in those areas, maybe Lidls can possibly do well in them as well.
If there one one thing about some of the people in my area is that if the price is right, the food is good and the customer service is right, they will come. Hopefully, that will be the similar response to your stores regardless what area you put them in.
You can’t possibly be serious about this comment!!! Are you?
Please put one in Surfside Beach South Carolina
Glad you are coming to Rockingham, NC….It is always nice for competition. I love Aldis and I’m sure I will love Lidl also.
Thank you for picking our community to open the 1st store in USA….
Any idea when they are opening?
Trying to give feed back and complaint about the Braemoor 100% beef burgers, Embarrassingly chewed on from by friends.
I bought these as they looked good,. they may be 100% beef but for sure 3 0r even 5% sinew grizzle. Spoilt the meal completely
I would like to know where are all your product from Maitre Jean Pierre come from. I have looked at the bar-code but it is unreadable and there is not information at all in the shop or in the packeting . thank you very much, hope to hear from you pretty soon
Great. Heard that one of these stores might be coming to Charlotte, NC. All we need is yet another discount grocery store that sells produce that rots quickly (because it’s old) and eventually (just as aldi has done) a center aisle full of non-food, made in China crap. No thanks. Kiss off!!!
you sell fruit i.e. oranges in packs of eight or ten plus various other fruits in this form.why do you not put a sell by date on them, many times I have bought these in this form, but the fruit seems to go off very quickly, also it happens with your potatoes, this happens after only 2 or 3 days ? now I wont buy these products from your stores please rectify this situation,
