The Kroger Co. is North America’s largest grocery chain, operating about 3,619 stores located throughout the Midwestern, Southern, South western and Western United States. It is also the second largest general retailer in the United States, next to Wal-Mart.
History
Bernard. H. Kroger is the founder of The Kroger Co. and started the company in the year 1883. The business was initially started as a grocery store, which was later named as Great Western Tea Company. This was the first one of its kind in the United States. After his father incurred loss in the family dry goods store that he decided to try his luck in retailing. By 1885, he opened three branches of the tea company in Cincinnati. In 1902, the company’s name was changed to The Kroger Grocery and Baking Company. By that time, he had 40 stores and one factory in Cincinnati. Two years later, in 1904, he was also the proud owner of Nagel Meat Markets and Packing House and introduced meat departments in his grocery stores.
By 1912, Kroger expanded his company to Hamilton, Toledo, Dayton and Columbus in Ohio; St. Louis, Missouri; Indianapolis, Indiana; Detroit, Michigan; and Springfield, Illinois. In 1929, Kroger had around 5,575 stores around the United States. The company changed its name to The Kroger Co. in 1946. It opened pharmacy stores in 1960. During its reign in the retail industry, the company acquired Dillon Companies, Inc. and Fred Meyer, Inc. The annual revenue of the company crossed $50 billion in 2000.

When Food4less was active, I bought a 10pack of English muffins. What happened to them. They are not available in Smith’s here in Las Vegas, NV? Paul L. Hood
We just drove 60 miles (one way-1 hr.)) to get to your store in Port Huron, Mi. (the closets Kroger),. & was very disappointed that most of your items were YOUR BRAND ONLY. What happened to getting your choice of brands?
Will there ever be a Kroger’s in St. Louis Mo again?
Are there any stores in the east central to north central Minnesota area? Mainly around Hinckley, Minnesota.
Are we foodsco a part of the kroger mega sale that’s going on?
I am quite sadden by the human race. Whning like chiildrenl get you nothing. The comments I see are reactive, rather than proactive.
I love the customer servce at Smiths, but when I have an issue with a product I do not come online and complain, actually take the time to call Kroger. They log your complainand then when they have a compilation of the same issues, they address it attheir regional meetings.
On the other side…
Stop making snarky comments. We are here to help each other, not pass judgement. Didn’t your momma teach you…if ya don’t have anything nice or helpful to say, be quiet?

Truly PEOPLE !
I find it funny that you have nothing to do other than complain about where you buy Groceries !

Thank you Mike. I just read all of these comments because I was enthralled with the stupidity of most of them. Folks, if you don’t like a place, don’t shop there! If Kroger doesn’t have a store in your area, it’s probably because putting one in would be an investment loss. And Delores, reading your complaints, Kroger would probably be glad to see you shop somewhere else.
In small, rural towns often there is no choice but Kroger, not even “Mom-and–Pop” stores anymore (sigh). Furthermore, in many very small towns, the nearest choice, be it Kroger or some other big chain store, is 30 or more miles away – not a desirable situation for those who can’t or should not drive, and not good for the environment in any case.
we have a wonderful new Kroger in the city where I reside, and I frequent it often. Tonight is the first time that I have had a really frustrating experience, and I feel the need to vent. I ran into your store to make a quick purchase. As I was on my way to the self-check-out counter I passed a section of marked down “Back to school ” products. I selected two sets of pens that had very good marked down prices and proceeded to the check-out scanner. I scanned the two items I had originally come to purchased, and then scanned to two pen sets. I was surprised when they did not scan at the reduced price as marked on the section where I had found them. I called the clerk over and told her that the scanned price was wrong as they had been marked down in the school supplies section. She, of course, went to check, after voiding the items from my scanner screen. She then took the two pen packs over to the customer service counter and waited her turn to ask what to do. Finally, the clerk on duty at that station came out and I told her that I was under the impression that if an item rang up a price that was different from the price advertised on the shelf, the customer received that item free.
At that point she began keying in the two pen sets so that they would reflect the marked down price. She told me that if I had paid for the items at the original price and then told the clerk that I was wrongly charged, I would have been given my money back and received the items free. I responded that I recognized that I was going to be wrongly charged and stopped my transaction. In any case, I am displeased that Kroger failed to adjust their computers on the school supplies mark-downs…I wonder if, after I left, did they take time to deal with the rest of the items in that section? I did see another customer across from me in the self-scan line pitch a spiral ring notebook in a bin when it didn’t reflect the sale price…He just had the clerk void it off his ticket. I don’t think he was very happy either. I would appreciate some clarification on this matter. I am a loyal Kroger shopper, and in fact, I was “Price Patrol Girl” many years ago in Nashville, Tenn. Hopefully, I won’t have to deal with this again. …C. Dunlop
why does Kroger’s take sale signs down early even sometimes as early as Friday and a lot on saturday
someone told me about your carb master low carb vanilla milk and I tried it and it is delicious only problem the Owensboro Ky. stores are out of it a lot. I am a food addict and I need to drink milk every day and this is only milk I like . you need to promote this because know one else carries anything like it. I have tried soy, coconut and almond and carb master vanilla is the only one that has a great taste, lowest in sugar and fat even beats skim milk in calories and sugar. you have a product that everyone needs to know about.
