The Kroger Co. is North America’s largest grocery chain, operating about 3,619 stores located throughout the Midwestern, Southern, South western and Western United States. It is also the second largest general retailer in the United States, next to Wal-Mart.
History
Bernard. H. Kroger is the founder of The Kroger Co. and started the company in the year 1883. The business was initially started as a grocery store, which was later named as Great Western Tea Company. This was the first one of its kind in the United States. After his father incurred loss in the family dry goods store that he decided to try his luck in retailing. By 1885, he opened three branches of the tea company in Cincinnati. In 1902, the company’s name was changed to The Kroger Grocery and Baking Company. By that time, he had 40 stores and one factory in Cincinnati. Two years later, in 1904, he was also the proud owner of Nagel Meat Markets and Packing House and introduced meat departments in his grocery stores.
By 1912, Kroger expanded his company to Hamilton, Toledo, Dayton and Columbus in Ohio; St. Louis, Missouri; Indianapolis, Indiana; Detroit, Michigan; and Springfield, Illinois. In 1929, Kroger had around 5,575 stores around the United States. The company changed its name to The Kroger Co. in 1946. It opened pharmacy stores in 1960. During its reign in the retail industry, the company acquired Dillon Companies, Inc. and Fred Meyer, Inc. The annual revenue of the company crossed $50 billion in 2000.

I shope at the Kroger in Ottawa and really like the store but they have stopped carrying soy yogurt. I am allergic to dairy products and would like to see them start carrying again.
Can we get a Kroger in the Tampa Bay market Sweetbay wasn’t much and Adli and Whole Foods can make it new here… I know KROGER GROCERIES STORES would have no problem taking closing Sweetbay (Feb 2013) Grocery spots and MAKE IT in FLORIDA!
I live in Knoxville, TN and have family in Chattanooga, TN. Is there woke corporate reason for not having a store in Hamilton County TN?
I purchased all Natural Meal-Ready side Broccoli & Cauliflower. The picture on the front of the package looked great. What was Inside the bag did not resemble the picture. It was mostly small pieces and stems. Althought I cooked as bag instructed, it did not taste fresh, I was very disappointed. I will always buy fresh vegetables not Kroger brand frozen foods again. bar code # 0 11110 89780 0
I regularly shop a the Kroger store at Kirby and Main Street in Houston, Texas. I often choose the self check out and I would like to just let everyone know about the woman manning the check out station, Mittie. This woman, without a doubt, is the most pleasant, helpful and all around hardest working employee in that store. I have, at times, become very frustrated while checking out when the scanner doesn’t pick up my itme or the times that the machine stops to call an attendant. Mittie is right there to assist and fix any and all issues with a smile on her face. I don’t believe that Kroger has the best prices in town, but I believe they have one of the best employees in Mittie and that is why I go back. In retail, customer service is everything, and Mittie has it all.
Thanks Mittie, for making my grocery shopping experiences always pleasant.
I was in line to check out the cashier walked off he said he would be right back we stood
thear about 10 min. He was putting bags on rack for a cashier if she can’t put bags on the rack God HELP US.
Get a life
Our newly enlarged and decorated Kroger seems to continue to have problems. My first complaint was the Amigo carts (which I need in a store this size) they were few and never properly charged. While this has improved twice in the last 2 weeks the cart died while my basket was full and I was far from the registers. I notice often there are many carts but non are plugged in to recharge. On 2 occasions recently I have had to ask someone in produce for more of something. Just the other day I went to get corn on the cob an advertised special and I couldn’t find 8 decent ears (8 for $2) 2 other people came up and left. All that was left on the shelf was garbage. I buy the Johnsonville Chorizo’s regularly and three times in the past month they were totally out or had to go into the freezer and bring more out. I regularly get coupons for Hills Bros Cappacino but the store only carries French Vanilla and there are many other flavors (which I prefer) and the pricing is always higher than Meijers and Walmart. Tonight I went and Krogers Frozen Chicken was an advertised special. I wanted The Orange Chicken (something I buy regularly) and was only able to get one bag. A man filling freezers said there was no more and there possibly would not be any more. He thought they were clearing the product out. Now I can get that product at Meijers, Walmart and Costco. I think someone better get it together or I’ll be shopping a whole lot more at these places.
I find it most difficult to find salmon from the US at a reasonable price. I do not like buying food from a foreign country. What' s up with this Surely there are suppliers in the US.
Pam, I too am a customer of Kroger’s. My wife brought home a package of Salmon with the title “ATLANTIC SALMON Fillets” displayed on the front of the package. On the back in small letters it said, “Farm Raised Product of Chile.”

I live in Pensacola Fl. WE DO NOT HAVE A GOOD OR HALF WAY GOOD SUPPER MARKET HERE. we have only walmart , half of the time the shelfs are empty , or you will find something you like and when you go back they want have it some time it will come back around nine to twelve months. The fresh veg. and fruits are not fit to take home. then we have Publix is here so high in price you can't get what you need or want. and we have a Win Dixie they do not carry very much and they are very high. THIS IS ALL WE HAVE BIG CHOICE. PLEASETHANK ABOUT COMING TO PENSACOLA, FL AND NOT JUST IN ONE PLACE HERE.
Cornelia – I’m sorry that you don’t have a Kroger but I wish we had Publix. Kroger charges more than any grocery store I’ve seen in TX and FL. I’ve purchased “fresh” vegetables in Flower Mound TX and they are mushy less than two days later. I purchased a 1 lb. package of ground sirloin and when I tried to divide it into portions, it turned out to be 12 oz. If you wish for anything, wish for the Texas Tom Thumb. Great grocery, great deli, great bakery and they don’t expect to make their entire profit on one customer. I only go to Kroger when I don’t have time to go anyplace else because I just can’t afford them
I am sorry to have just read that Krogers (Retail groceries) have decided to let people carry guns into their stores. (perhaps they just forgot a loaf of bread or something and want to just pop in, and so being allowed to, they decided what the heck, they would bring their gun in, to feel safe from any grocery store threat.
One question Krogers, how are we to tell the good guys from the bad guys, now that bad guys will probably think in their own way, that when there is no one else at that particular time, with guns toted, it will make it a little easier for the robbers and killers, to do their nasty deeds.
What, are you NUTS. Give me a break. STOP allowing guns in your store. Til then, I will never shop with you again, amongst many many other shoppers who feel the same way.
Bad guys will bring guns into the store no matter what the laws and rules are. I prefer the good guys to have them so if the bad one does try something stupid at least people can protect the good. I wish people could get it that taking guns away from the American people does not keep it from the bad people. This is off the topic of the grocery store….The reason we have not had war on our soil is because Americans have guns and are not afraid to use them when needed.
