Hannaford Bros. Co. is a wholesale provider to its own and other retail supermarkets in the United States.
History
Hannaford was founded in 1883 by Arthur Hannaford as a small produce shop along the Portland, Maine, waterfront. His brothers Howard and Edward joined the business in 1902 and together incorporated Hannaford Bros. Co. Within the first two decades of the 20th century, the company became a leading produce wholesaler in northern New England.
The company began its expansion into the wholesale grocery business in 1939 with the purchase of Tondreau Supermarkets Inc. It opened its first retail outlet in 1944 under an equity partnership arrangement with Adjutor Tondreau. Hannaford remained a traditionally New England company until it purchased Wilson’s Supermarkets in North Carolina in the 1990s. Seeing the company’s success, Delhaize America, a division of food retailer Delhaize Group, bought Hannaford Bros. Inc. in 2000.
Staying true to its roots, Hannaford has remained committed to supporting local farmers and other local businesses. Its Close to Home program accounts for shorter distances to keep fresher items stocked. In 2009, Hannaford constructed the world’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design compliant grocery store and instituted the Guiding Stars program, a system designed to help shoppers determine the nutritional values of various products.
In addition to its retail supermarkets, Hannaford Bros. Co. has continued providing wholesale food through its warehouses in South Portland and Winthrop, ME, and Schodack, N.Y., even creating the Hannaford Trucking Company in 1982 to handle its trucking needs. Licensed to transport in 48 states, Hannaford Trucking Company is fully staffed with its own drivers and high-tech dispatch equipment. Maintaining complete control over all aspects of the supermarket process, from wholesaling to shipping to retailing, is what makes Hannaford Bros. Co. a unique entity. With company objectives to use local markets to stock individual stores, the company is meeting its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint.

Goshen NY really wants Hannaford supermarket to be put in Goshen Shopping Plaza. Please open your store there. :)
I have been a Hannaford shopper (or whatever) over the past 40 years in Nashua but as of today I will be changing to Domulas Market Basket. I went shopping this morning and what usually takes 1/2 hour took over an hour. The store is in the middle of doing a complete reset. If I have to look for items while shopping I might as well save money. Even the employees didn’t know where items where. I can see some resets but not a complete store. Looks like you have lost a devoted shopper over some stupid idea that I would spend more money if I don’t know where items are.
Love your Gardner, MA store. The produce is great and affordable. I love that you carry local produce and USA produce. I haven’t shopped at Stop & Shop in a long time. And when Price Chopper came to town, tried them once. Walked out with 1/2 the groceries I usually get from Hannaford. Never went back.
Stupid human question…
Today I purchased a 4lb bag of Premium Yellow Flesh Potatoes.
And found the skins to be green… I believe that’s a poison named Solanine
due to bad storage.
Please can you assure this is safe.

Purchased from your ” Trade Winds Store ” in Blue Hill. Me
I don’t believe it is safe. Please return to the store.
Question is the Middleboro, Ma. store going to continue stocking R W Knudsen -Sparkling cherry juice? It appear I bought the last 2 in the past week.
The store located on Weibel Ave. in Saratoga Springs,NY has two large containers placed on the side of the store building proper. They are placed so that they take up as much 75% of the roadway in one of the lanes running north and south. This roadway is a public roadway not a private roadway to be used as Hannaford see’s fit to use it. It is causing traffic to progress into the other lane. After informing your company of this if I am involved in any collision because of the placement of these containers which are there for your companies usage only, I will sue naming all parties as contributing to the cause of the accident. This notification is sufficient for your firm to take appropriate action and reposition these containers elsewhere. Your firm has no right to commandeer any portion of the roadway for your specific applications!
Questioning why you no longer carry Lindys ‘ LEMON’ ICE. You carry other flavors but not LEMON. This product used to fly off your shelf. Notice the other flavors are not flying/moving as fast! ?????? Also wonder why you are all wearing the slogan regarding Hannaford’s new lower prices. Lower than what? Whenever we frequent other establishments /your competitors, they almost always beat your prices. We continue to shop at your store only for ‘convenience of location’ but we almost always have to go elsewhere anyway, since you’re out of or don’t carry items we need or desire. Price Chopper in our area ,for example, does a fantastic job with carrying most of what we want, has prices lower or as good, has a gas card program, and we even receive discounts on tickets to local ballet/theater events with a Price Chopper card. Our main reason for contacting you is the LINDY’s Lemon Ice but could not but help comment on what you perceive to be lower prices. Couldn’t help but tell one of your employees that Walmart employees were wearing shirts stating that their prices were lower than Hannaford’s new lower prices! Sorry but couldn’t help such. It’s all psychological–same stuff Osama Obama is selling at the White House but many of us, who think, don’t buy it! Good luck with your new slogan!
I love your store, only wish u had more fresh flowers.
I have found everyone to be friendly and helpful, everyone with a smile!
Several times an Associate named Robert Vega has gone out of his way, produce, to help me find products in different aisle and can tell me what it is made out. Refined wheat, refined flour stuff like that. Very friendly and knowledable about just everything or he will find out for you.
Thanks! A happy Gloversville customer.
We are shoppers at the Manchester nh Bicentennial Dr. location. Do not understand why you carry so many different ready to bake cinnamon buns, but no orange buns. Every one of stores we have been to does not carry them. We do know that Market Basket and Stop and Shop have them, do not know if other stores have them. Any chance of a “change of heart” and maybe get them in stock?
I "don't" like your store….nothing that was advertised was in that store in Bennington, Vermont…..think I'll go back to priece chopper.
"Very" dissapointed this morning…..especially on the meat pie that "you don't have"….
