Hannaford SupermarketsHannaford Bros. Co. is a wholesale provider to its own and other retail supermarkets in the United States.

History
Hannaford was founded in 1883 by Arthur Hannaford as a small produce shop along the Portland, Maine, waterfront. His brothers Howard and Edward joined the business in 1902 and together incorporated Hannaford Bros. Co. Within the first two decades of the 20th century, the company became a leading produce wholesaler in northern New England.

The company began its expansion into the wholesale grocery business in 1939 with the purchase of Tondreau Supermarkets Inc. It opened its first retail outlet in 1944 under an equity partnership arrangement with Adjutor Tondreau. Hannaford remained a traditionally New England company until it purchased Wilson’s Supermarkets in North Carolina in the 1990s. Seeing the company’s success, Delhaize America, a division of food retailer Delhaize Group, bought Hannaford Bros. Inc. in 2000.

Staying true to its roots, Hannaford has remained committed to supporting local farmers and other local businesses. Its Close to Home program accounts for shorter distances to keep fresher items stocked. In 2009, Hannaford constructed the world’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design compliant grocery store and instituted the Guiding Stars program, a system designed to help shoppers determine the nutritional values of various products.

In addition to its retail supermarkets, Hannaford Bros. Co. has continued providing wholesale food through its warehouses in South Portland and Winthrop, ME, and Schodack, N.Y., even creating the Hannaford Trucking Company in 1982 to handle its trucking needs. Licensed to transport in 48 states, Hannaford Trucking Company is fully staffed with its own drivers and high-tech dispatch equipment. Maintaining complete control over all aspects of the supermarket process, from wholesaling to shipping to retailing, is what makes Hannaford Bros. Co. a unique entity. With company objectives to use local markets to stock individual stores, the company is meeting its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint.
