Fry’s Food Stores is a supermarket chain based in Arizona, USA. The company is owned by The Kroger Co.
History
Fry’s Food was founded in Contra Costa County of California in 1954. The founder was Donald Fry, who was originally from Oklahoma. It was with the help of his brother Charles Fry that he opened the first store. Fry’s Food stores sold products like bakery, deli, dairy, frozen foods, general grocery, meat, pharmacy, produce, seafood, snacks and liquor. While studying, Charles Fry was the high school basketball player. Before opening his first supermarket in California, he also earned a degree in Mathematics. Over the next few years, the company expanded. In the 1960s, he opened 41 new Fry’s Food stores in and around California. These were located in San Francisco, Phoenix and Arizona.
Charles Fry had three sons, John, Randy and David. John Fry was an excellent football player. In 1978, he graduated from Santa Clara University with a degree in Mathematics like his father. During his studies, he was also recruited to Santa Clara football team. But, he had to retire from football due to serious injuries. So, after studies, he decided to join his father’s business. In 1972, Modesto, California based Save Mart Supermarkets bought Fry’s Food for $14 million. But, Charles Fry maintained it until 1978. After that, the Fry family left the supermarket business and opened electronics stores. By the 1980s, Fry’s Food became a division of The Kroger Co.
In 1998, the Fred Meyer Company announced a merger with Kroger and this was approved by Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in 1999. Thus the merged company was named The Kroger Co. At that time, Smith’s Food and Drug was a subsidiary of Fred Meyer. After the merger, many stores in Arizona and Texas overlapped. Most of Smith’s Food and Drug stores changed their name to Fry’s Food and Drug Inc. Some of the Smith’s Food and Drug stores in Kingman, Bullhead City and Lake Havasu City have remained under the old brand name.

The store at 57th and Thunderbird is sure do for a makeover! Is it ever going to happen or will it close? The last few years it has really gone downhill. Have been shopping there for 30 years and not much has ever been done. There is a newer sore at 59th and the 101 which I see is being remodeled.
Purchased 3 Boxes of Whit Wine & Garlic Mussels(Private Selection) from Frys in Prescott Valley AZ on Sunday morning June 17, 2018. Followed the instructions and did each pkg separately. Most of the mussels did not open and those that did were mushy and extremely small. 16 – June 2020 is the expiration and Production codes is 170118 L: 126180117. The Bar code is 11110 96367. Very disappointed as I have had these many times and they were terrific.
THANK YOU
The Frys at 7th ave and Camelback is very ghetto! Parking does not conform to the ADA law.
People which are homeless walk around in the store eating food then put it back!
If I go at night I carry!
This store has always been sorry.
Wish another company would build another store in our area!
I absolutely, love your stores. The first and only time I have been in one of your stores was in Oct. /14. I have never, in my life seen such a clean store with a magnificent selection of food. I was in Arizona (Phoenix) on vacation. I’m coming back this October and can’t wait to shop in your stores. I tell all my friends about fry’s and they will have a great experience shopping there. Keep up the great work!
I am a very regular customer at the store on oracle and first in Oro Valley AZ. I average over 1000 points for gas each month. For the most part, I am highly satisfied with the quality of merchandise. The seafood market is great, The employees are great, especially the ladies who bag the groceries. However, I am most disappointed with one of the brand lines you carry. Heritage farms is nothing but trash. The bacon is junk and the sausage (2 for $4.00 is no bargain. It is all fat and tasteless. You should be ashamed to allow this brand to exist on your shelves. Nuff said?
I went to your store on 91st and Olive in Peoria yesterday and was sadly disappointed. After all the advertising of lowering prices, they have all been RAISED (I presume to sock it to the people) because of the Super Bowl. The small bottles of Raspberry Iced Tea – I used to pay 99 cents for — only a TREAT once in a while, because price is too high. Now they are raised to a permanent $1.79!!! I noticed breakfast items have their prices raised as well. PRICES SHOULD BE GOING DOWN……GAS IS WAY DOWN!!! And, your bakery items are WAY OUT OF MY PRICE RANGE….have always been, except maybe the French bread. HOW IN THE WORLD CINNAMON TWISTS can cost almost $4 is LUDICROUS!!! SMH….. Those of us on limited incomes may have to stop eating all together… :-(
HI-I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO GO ABOUT GETTING GIFT CERTIFICATES FOR MY GRAND-DAUGHTER. I BOUGHT HER ONE WHEN I WAS OUT THERE, AND MAILED IT TO HER JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS, SO SHE COULD BUY A NICE HAM-ETC. WHEN I LIVED IN GLENDALE I SHOPPED AT FRY’S-NEVER ANY COMPLAINTS. BUT I MOVED EAST—-AND WOULD LIKE TO PURCHASE GIFT CERTIFICATES FOR MY GRAND-DAUGHTER WHO LIVES IN MESA….THANKS…
I live in Tucson Arizona and am wondering if they are still plans in the works for building a new Frys off of Valencia Rd. near Casino Del Sol. There was a sign saying it was coming but I no longer see it.
I was going to the bathroom in the men’s restroom of Fry’s Sierra Vista, AZ when a woman employee named Patricia Haynes (Patty) she said came barging in without knocking and I was pissing in the urinal and others were on the pot shitting. I told her this wasn’t right and she says her manager Steve told her she could do anything she wanted she was the boss and I want a complaint filled and for her not to work in the men’s bathroom. We men felt violated and raped at her words and I believe a man should clean a man’s bathroom and she has too much power. She went on to state she can get fellow employees in trouble and lie to her boss and never get herself in trouble. She would also get an employee Chris in trouble and fired if she wanted to and his mom in trouble even if she shopped at frys because Manager Steve told her she can do anything she wants and has the power. I will let fellow Veteran’s know as there are places to shop without feeling violated and this worker needs fired and reprimanded. I was just a customer and I felt for this lady and her son and the file Patricia Haynes needs to be fired. Any other man have the same problem with this employee rushing into bathrooms? file a complaint.
I’m surprised they didn’t at least post an apology on your complaint
