Food Lion LLC
A wholly owned subsidiary of Delhaize America, Food Lion LLC is a discount supermarket chain.
History
Food Lion LLC was created in 1983, when Delhaize America, a division of Delhaize Group, renamed Food Town Stores Inc. – the southeastern grocery chain it had purchased in 1976. Food Lion, based in North Carolina, became Delhaize America’s largest associate, employing 73,000 people at 1,300 stores throughout the United State in 2009.
With the goal of providing private-label and brand-name products at a discount, Food Lion at one time proffered the slogan: “Lowest Food Prices in North Carolina,” which was adapted for use in South Carolina and Virginia. With sales of $17.3 billion in 2006, primarily attributable to Food Lion LLC, Delhaize America was recognized as number 10 in the Top 75 North American Food Retailers.
Food Lion did, however, see a decline in market share and expansion throughout the 1990s after it sold its Bangkok, Thailand, stores to a different supermarket chain and pulled out of a number of American cities, including Houston and Dallas. It also cancelled leases and closed hundreds of stores in Oklahoma and Louisiana after a damaging report about unsanitary practices on ABC’s Primetime Live tarnished the company’s reputation. A lawsuit followed and the company was eventually able to regain its footing in other areas.
To that end, the company began a market renewal effort in 2003, updating select stores and improving product offerings. It rebranded Food Lion stores, changing the color scheme from red and white to brown.
Each of Food Lion’s banners offers a different shopping experience and appeals to a specific demographic. Bottom Dollar Food, for example, operates deep discount stores that appeal to bargain hunters, while Bloom is an alternative, upscale banner. Reid’s stores are mostly smaller and older locations that cannot be physically expanded or whose market will not bear a larger store.

The food lion on Reilly Road in Fayetteville, NC must be mishandling food. I haven’t been shopping here long but have had 2 different orders of pork bad. I also had a chicken bad but I don’t think that was there fault. I had a can of pineapple bad and although it was food lion’s brand and the girl refunding it was acting ridiculous on return policies with the meat on the different occasions, she didn’t see fit to give me double my money back on the pineapple. I also had horrible cookies that were separating due to improper food handling, breakfast bars that were crumbling and funny tasting as well as the little debbies sweets not tasting right and looking old even though still in code. I’ve also had a A few items marked down did not scan marked down. It is a lot of wasted time going to this food lion when returns and price adjustments are needed. I have shopped for decades and have never had to return but a couple of times in my life until now.
Customer service on the phone is a waste of time and life since they will take all your time getting information and then tell you to return it to the store after wasting about 20 minutes of your time.

I shopped at a Food Lion in Calhoun, Ga yesterday. It was exceptionally clean, no food odors, nice wide aisles. Wish we had one in Ball Ground , Ga.
My wife and I live alone. There are just two of us. Tonight we decided to have hamburgers for dinner. I usually run up and get a couple of hamburger rolls but today I went up and asked for 2 rolls as they weren’t out and was told. Sorry – we only sell as 6 per customer in the bakery for 2.49. So I went and got a package of 8 and 6 will get tossed. Next time I will go to Lowes or Harris Teeter where I can get then individually. Your little lion ads are cute but you need to understand that people shop where they can get what they want to buy, NOT what you want to sell.
I would like to make a career with food lion. I feel as though Food Lion would be a wonderful place for me to get ahead in life, and make something good out of my life.
