Food Lion LLC
A wholly owned subsidiary of Delhaize America, Food Lion LLC is a discount supermarket chain.
History
Food Lion LLC was created in 1983, when Delhaize America, a division of Delhaize Group, renamed Food Town Stores Inc. – the southeastern grocery chain it had purchased in 1976. Food Lion, based in North Carolina, became Delhaize America’s largest associate, employing 73,000 people at 1,300 stores throughout the United State in 2009.
With the goal of providing private-label and brand-name products at a discount, Food Lion at one time proffered the slogan: “Lowest Food Prices in North Carolina,” which was adapted for use in South Carolina and Virginia. With sales of $17.3 billion in 2006, primarily attributable to Food Lion LLC, Delhaize America was recognized as number 10 in the Top 75 North American Food Retailers.
Food Lion did, however, see a decline in market share and expansion throughout the 1990s after it sold its Bangkok, Thailand, stores to a different supermarket chain and pulled out of a number of American cities, including Houston and Dallas. It also cancelled leases and closed hundreds of stores in Oklahoma and Louisiana after a damaging report about unsanitary practices on ABC’s Primetime Live tarnished the company’s reputation. A lawsuit followed and the company was eventually able to regain its footing in other areas.
To that end, the company began a market renewal effort in 2003, updating select stores and improving product offerings. It rebranded Food Lion stores, changing the color scheme from red and white to brown.
Each of Food Lion’s banners offers a different shopping experience and appeals to a specific demographic. Bottom Dollar Food, for example, operates deep discount stores that appeal to bargain hunters, while Bloom is an alternative, upscale banner. Reid’s stores are mostly smaller and older locations that cannot be physically expanded or whose market will not bear a larger store.

I use the Food Lion stores in Oxford NC. There are many of your customers who have food incompatibilities. And dairy products are at the top of the list (allergies, lactose intolerance most commonly reported). Thankfully, there are substitutes available and most can enjoy soy products that can approximate the dairy experience. My children and I are part of those people who enjoy and take advantage of dairy-type products made from soy, coconut and almond milk. Our favorite is the Silk line of soy products and at our neighborhood grocery all their variations of milk are offered. The exception is Silk yogurt, neither plain or flavored is offered by your stores or any other grocers in town. What I have been doing os shop with your competitors when I am in one of the communities nearby. What I am proposing is that you offer the Silk yogurt for sale with enough fanfare that the regular customers are informed and see how it goes. By the way, we have been trying the Nature’s Place brand of soymilk and don’t like it and will not be buying it again.
the food lion on 5th. street Charlottesville,va. is the worst grocery store I’ve ever been in. i get charged full price for items that are marked “on sale”. this happens a lot in this location. also they never have any carts. how can I shop when there are no carts?. corporate executives should look into and do something abou this. poor management is probably the culprit. thanks
I shop at Food Lion #0706 (Georgetown, SC). I have always received very good customer service. The staff has always been helpful and very friendly. When you walk in the door, you’re greeted with welcome to Food Lion and a friendly smile. Employees of store #0706, keep up the good work. Beverly
I would like to understand why the things I like to purchase most are always being discontinued either by Food Lion or by the store. The Food Lion in Ladysmith Virginia stopped carring Lenders Bagels. They only have a very limited few so of course the kind I buy they no longer carry. I have to make a special trip to the Walmart either in Ashland or near Fredericksburg to get my bagels. And now I can no longer find plain turnip greens in the can. Everything is already seasoned including the My Essentials. I do not like the way the flavored greens taste. I know how to cook and want to flavor my own. I even tried to get them frozen and you guesed it. They do not carry them. I should not complain though because the same is said for Walmart. I just cannot get them anywhere.
Same here. Today it was Bullseye BBQ sauce. Why have you discontinued that one? The Management seems to have no clue what is going on. I’m not alone; others tell me the same thing–they can’t get stuff there like they used to. So why is this happening?
WE HAVE A FOODLION AND WALMART IN MT.OLIVE NC.
ALSO A FOODLION AT FIVE POINTS RD IN GOLDSBORO NC.
I AM CENTERED BETWEEN THESE 2 LOCATIONS.
I PURCHASED 2 CANS OF FOODLION BRAND EARLY
GARDEN PEAS AT THE SAME TIME AT THE FIVE POINTS
LOCATION. I HAVE TAKEN PICTURES OF BOTH OF THESE
OPENED CANS. THEY HAVE THE SAME NUMBERS AND CODES
ON BOTH CANS. ONE OF THESE CANS, WHEN I OPENED IT,
HAD ”DIRT” ALL IN THE CAN.. IT SMELLED REALLY BAD, THE
JUICE IN THE CAN WAS ”BLACK”.
IF ANYONE HAS A ”CUSTOMER SERVICE” LINK TO FOODLION
I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE IT. THE SMELL WAS SOOO BAD.
IT MADE ME SICK.
I WAS TOLD TO ”JUST BRING IT BACK”, BUT SOMEONE NEEDS TO
KNOW AND NOT FORGET IT.. IF A CHILD HAD OPENED THE
CAN AND ATE THOSE PEAS,, I SHIVER TO THINK WHAT MIGHT HAVE
HAPPENED..
I have requested by password over a week ago to apply for a job opening and have not receive a response yet.
Finally, after 4 faithful years, Food Lion #0289 in Myrtle Beach, SC has finally run me off! Each time I try to deal with them corncerning my purchase of cartons of cigars, I get mistreated….Deb, Shelly, Janice–they are great customer-service oriented, friendly people. The manager(I don’t know his name–stocky tall guy with tinted glasses), selena–they don’t do what I ask for–now, I know I don’t run the world or Food Lion #0289 but no effort is made to accomodate my reasonable good all-around intents requests. Today, I had a one-days worth paycheck, I shopped calculatedly to get some of what me & my family needed. There was no cardboard carton available so when I purchased a 10-pack “carton” Selena went out of her way to charge me per-pack price ! When I realized how low-life/mean she acted I went in, asked for the manager and received $2.93 refund which the new “customer service”manager ridiculed while it was given to me! Thats’ not Customer Service as I was taught to give it and I won’t be back. I’ll go the extra mile to Walmart where I know i’ll be abandoned by unhelpful, talking amoung each other employees, at least I’ll not be cheated & abused. Sincerely, Kimberly Thompson.
Store #2674 Walkertown, NC.
Your 800-210-9569 number will not do anything but tell me that you are interested in client comments, but please hold–I did through 10 such messages. Enough!
Your website http://www.foodlion.com does not have any way to leave comments. So I googled you to get to grocery.com/foodlion/
I just watched a lady with a full basket be “ordered” to leave your only open line (1) to a non-staffed line 2. When she asked for help, she was told that someone would be at line 2 soon–no one came. Then she asked again, and someone was summoned who told her to move to line 3. I then asked for the manager as she had already placed her entire basket on line 2. Neither he nor the clerks felt that any rudeness was done.
I gather from all this that you don’t really care about customer service–and when you fail as Winn-Dixie did, don’t wonder why.
Suggestions:
1) Have a number on your receipts that is only for Customer Service & answer the calls, or make it possible to leave a message..
2) Make client service a priority–clients do pay the bills.
3) Offer manners training to your employees.
Oh yes, luckily there is competition even in small towns.
Whey do you not keep the carts for handicap people in good shape ,the store at collage park does not even have one and the store on milarity highway in va beach has two which do not run these srores are both in vabeach va. I like shoping at food lion but I need a cart to do my shoping, I can not do a lot of walking, but If Ican’t find a cart that works at these stores I will do my shopping where they have carts.
i tried to get a refund on some ham that i had bought i believe it was at the store in lawrenceville, va.
i was going to roanoke rapids, nc so i stopped in the food lion store in roanoke rapids to get the refund, had the receipt and all. the people working there were very rude and would not give me a refund, said if they could not resale it they would lose money. i wonder if they would have resold the bad ham. they were not courtesy and did not care to satisfy the coulstomer. all this was over a four dollar refund.
i have been going to food lion stores for years and have never met such people. you need to change your assistant manager and the others. they are making food lion seem not to care about satisfing coustomers. please look into this matter.
thanks
