Eight O’Clock CoffeeEight O’ Clock Coffee is A&P’s own brand for its coffee products. This particular brand of coffee was introduced to the United States market in the year 1859.

History
Eight O’ Clock Coffee was launched into the U.S. market in 1859 by the grocery chain A&P. According to stories told, the brand originated in a survey that had been done regarding what time of day people usually drank coffee. Majority of those answered eight in the morning, as well as eight in the evening. Hence, the name Eight O’ Clock coffee. In 1919, the brand was given its trademark, which it still currently carries.

From the 1920’s until the 1950’s, Eight O’Clock coffee grabbed the top spot for the best-selling coffee in the United States. By the year 1930, Eight O’ Clock coffee had taken over one-fourth of the United States market share and was considered to be the most popular brand of coffee in the country. In 1979, A&P allowed for the sale of Eight O’ Clock coffee to its retailers, as well as competitors. In 2003, Eight O’Clock Coffee introduced its ground coffee product. In July of 2005, the brand was sold to Tata Coffee, a company headquartered in India.

For 150 years, the company has continued to keep its place in the coffee industry of the United States. Currently, Eight O’ Clock coffee is still a leading brand in the U.S. market. In fact, the Eight O’ Clock Coffee Co. is considered to be one of the largest sellers of whole-bean coffee in the country. Although the company is currently headquartered in Montvale, New Jersey, its coffee processing facility is located in Landover, Maryland.

Coffee varieties include Original, 100% Colombian, Bokar, Dark Italian Roast, Hazelnut, Mocha, Decaf Original, 100% Colombian (Decaf), French Roast, 50% Decaf and French Vanilla. These coffee flavors are available at retail stores in 11 ounce and 42 ounce coffee bags. Just recently, the coffee brand changed its packaging and logo in order to achieve a more contemporary appeal to its consumers. Although the brand logo has been improved, it remains essentially the same so that people who patronize the brand will still be able to identify it despite the new packaging.
