Daiei Trading Co., Incorporated has announced a product recall on one of its products, for a possible contamination of the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. The product in question is the Gourmet brand of large mouth smelt (komochi shishamo).
The frozen fish products were found to be un-eviscerated (internal organs had not been taken out) through a routine check by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. The frozen smelt product is packed in an un-coded tray made from Styrofoam, vacuum packed and contains 8 pieces per pack. The product weighs 100 gm. or 3.5 ounces (net weight). This frozen smelt product is brought in from Japan.
Affected areas include New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. Currently, there are no reported infections.
Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium that can cause the serious condition Botulism. Botulism, in some cases, can be a fatal condition. Most common symptoms of this infection include general weakness, double vision, dizziness and difficulty in swallowing or speaking. Constipation and abdominal distention can also be symptoms of the condition. People who suffer from a majority of these symptoms should immediately consult a doctor for treatment.
