History
On July 4, 1980, Lynn and Steve Bernard established the Cape Cod Potato Chips Company. Lynn had been in the food manufacturing business since the 1970s, and the two ran a natural food store. On a trip to Hawaii, Steve Bernard got the opportunity to taste the potato chips made by a leading chips manufacturer in Hawaii. After tasting their chips, he decided to start his own company. During that time, he was running an auto parts business. He sold his business, and decided to focus on a potato chip manufacturing business. For that, he built a manufacturing plant in Hyannis. He also bought a potato slicer for $3,000. Before starting the company, he took a course on potato chip manufacturing in Thomasville, Pennsylvania, at Martin’s Potato Chips.
Bernard developed his own unique method for making potato chips, cooking the chips in kettles in small batches to ensure high quality and stirring them with a rake, resulting in very crisp chips. For the first few years, the company faced hardships. Bernard had to rebuild a part of the plant when a running car crashed into his store. The money he got from the insurance along with the publicity surrounding the incident helped to improve his business. The sales increased, and the products soon reached supermarket shelves.
In 1985, Cape Cod Chips was sold to Anheuser–Busch, the owner of Eagle Snacks. Thus, the company became a division of Eagle Snacks. By 1986, the company started selling 80,000 bags of potato chips a day. It also expanded its business to all states along the East Coast. The sales also peaked to $16 million. In 1996, Steve Bernard, the founder of the company regained control over the company by purchasing it. By 1999, sales of the company crossed $30 million. The same year, it was sold to Lance Inc. Today, Cape Cod Chips operates as a private subsidiary of Lance Inc.
