Big M, or Big M Supermarkets, is a chain of grocery stores operating in the states of New York and Pennsylvania. Some Big M Supermarkets are owned by independent private owners while the rest of the Big M Supermarkets are operated by P&C Foods, which is a subsidiary of Penn Traffic Co.
History
Nothing much can be found as to the origins of Big M Supermarkets. However, this chain of grocery stores boomed in terms of expansion when it was acquired by P&C Foods, Inc. Big M was bought by P&C Foods, Inc. in the late 1950s as part of its expansion process.
By 1969, there were already 50 Big M stores being operated by P&C Foods. Three more Big M stores were opened around 1979. The expansion of Big M continued and by 1989, there were already 71 Big M supermarkets being run by P&C Foods.
However, Penn Traffic Co., Big M’s parent company, was encountering profit losses and was deep in millions of debt by the middle of 1992. During the following years, Penn Traffic was still getting deeper in debt which was why it filed for bankruptcy twice. On November 18, 2010, Penn Traffic Co, filed for Chapter 11 liquidation under bankruptcy. This action provides for the liquidation of all its property and the allocation of the proceeds to creditors holding valid claims. Those Big M Supermarkets that were being operated by P&C Foods (under Penn Traffic) will be included in the liquidation process. The remaining Big M stores, those that are independently owned will remain in operation. The main concern of these independent owners will now be where and how they will be getting the products that they will be selling in their respective Big M stores. This concern however is still not a crippling blow to their business as the independent owners can always find alternative suppliers that can give them the quality of goods that they want. Currently, Big M Supermarkets is still a strong competitor in the area of retail grocery.
Like all other supermarkets, Big M supermarkets offer delicatessens, beverages, meat products, seafood and other grocery goods.

I live in New York and I am disabled with a service animal, when at you Cincinnatus NY franchise I was not only embarrassed but shocked and disappointed that the owner told me I had to remove my service animal from the store. This is not only illegal, but hypocritical of him since he for years allowed his dog which was a petvto roan free in the grocery store. I have filed a complaint with the NYS Attorney General’s Human rights division but I am making more noise how Big M refuses service animals into their stores
I live in New York State and we have a Big M in Walton New York, I have to shop there because there is no other store in town. It seems that everytime I buy food Items such as all unprepared meats and Vegatables This store charges me tax on these Items I have to check out and then go to the customer service and get my tax money back. Can anyone tell me why this store is chargeing tax on non taxable items? I made a comment to the checkout girl about how rich they were getting by doing this and her responce was yes we are. WOW Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Not sure this can have an answer, but a recent Tops closure in the Sayre/AthensPA/Waverly NY area has left a population of about 12,000 underserved by grocery stores. A new Big M would do a significant amount of business in addition to filling a community need. Thank you. Bruce Shedden
I have been beyond frustrated every single visit to your Walton NY store for over 10 years!! Not one time have I gotten an accurate register receipt. I then have to stand in line at the customer service counter to get a refund. The sale prices are never entered into the computer system so I’m charged the full price, and always charged for both items when they’re advertised as BOGO! I swear if there was any competition in our village, the Big M would have to close its doors within 60 days or sooner.
I would love to own a Big M and would like to know if one is for sale. How would I find out or be contacted if a store is available or if Big M would consider assisting on a new site or old remodel?
Will you please send me your coupon policy
