Beech-Nut Nutrition Co. Beech-Nut, a subsidiary company of the Hero Group, is engaged in the production of toddler and infant food products. The company is headquartered in New York, USA.

History
Beech-Nut’s story started in 1891, when brothers Raymond and Walter Lipe, along with Bartlett Arkell and brothers John and David Zieley, created Imperial Packing Company. The company was engaged in the producing and distributing Beech Nut ham. This product was made based on Ephraim Lipe’s (Raymond and Walter’s father) smoked hams.

In 1892, the Zieley brothers sold their company shares to Raymond and Walter Lipe. For the next seven years, the company only produced and sold bacon and ham products. In 1899, Imperial Packing Company became incorporated and was renamed Beech Nuttagum Packing Company. A year after its incorporation, Beech-Nut’s engineers obtained a patent for the first ever vacuum jar, which had a lid and gasket that remained intact while being transported. Beech-Nut’s vacuum jar soon became an industry standard.

By 1925, Beech Nut had started to expand its products to peanut butter, pork and beans, chili sauce, spaghetti, macaroni, caramel, mints, coffee, jam, ketchup, mustard, marmalade, fruit drops and chewing gums. In 1931, the company launches strained baby food and was acquired by Life Savers Ltd.

Soon after, the company went into a merger with Squibb (a subsidiary of Olin Corporation) in 1968. In 1973, the company’s baby food division was sold to investors who were then led by Frank Nicholas. Nicholas then named his baby food company the Beech-Nut Food Co.

In 1977, Beech-Nut Food Co. became the first company to produce baby food products that did not contain any salt. Two years later, the company was sold to Nestle’, who in 1989 sold Beech-Nut Food Corporation to Ralston Purina.

In 2002, Beech-Nut’s baby food products were the first to contain the essential fatty acids DHA and ARA. Three years later, the company was again sold to another owner, this time to the Hero Group Firm, a Swiss-based company engaged in the production of high-quality consumer foods. Currently, with the Hero Group as its parent company, Beech-Nut® has become the second largest player in the United States market in terms of baby food products.
