Abbott’s Candy Shop is a privately-owned confectionery business based in Indiana,USA. The company primarily makes different kinds of soft and buttery caramels, as well as a variety of chocolate products.
History
Abbott’s Candy Shop was founded by William Clay Abbott. Before creating his candy business, W.C. Abbott first started a restaurant in his hometown in Hagerston, Indiana. This restaurant focused on offering fried chicken, short orders, steak, and fries.
In the same period, Abbott was experimenting on the first candy that was to become Abbott Candy’s product. Abbott was able to create his first butterscotch and quickly introduced it to the public. The product quickly gained popularity and soon Abbott was introducing two new products again, the “Je-bo” and Abbott’s homemade ice cream. After these products became known to the public, Abbott’s then introduced the chocolate drop.
When the orders for confectionery began to increase in large amounts, Abbott was torn between continuing to operate the restaurant or focusing on the still starting candy business. He finally decided to sell the restaurant and focus on the candy business. Abbott then bought a candy factory in the area of South Plum. In Abbott’s new candy factory, he created the company’s next product, the “salted peanut”.
In August 1985, W.C. Abbott moved the candy factory to his own backyard and remodeled a garage behind his house in order to place equipment for making candies. All members of the Abbott family were involved in making the candy products, from his wife Florence to his son John Bruce.
1942 was the year of W.C. Abbott’s death. It was also the year when the company had to stop producing its products, mainly due to the scarcity of both chocolate and sugar. The company was able to rise above the obstacle and in 1948, Abbott’s Candy completed its first expansion with a new basement and kitchen. The year after, business started to pick up again. However, manager John Bruce suffered a heart attack and died that year. W.C. Abbott’s widow Florence and John Bruce’s widow Rhea decided to take over managing the business. From then on, Abbott’s Candy started to slowly but steadily grow and create a name in the confectionery industry.
Today, Abbott’s Candy Shop offers a wide variety of caramel and chocolate products. There are flavored, chewy caramels as well as the original butter caramels. As for chocolates, there special assorted, regular assorted, and the nutty varieties of chocolate candies.
