Jonathan’s Sprouts announced a product recall last April 19 for specific sprouts products. The recall was made because the products showed possible bacterial contamination.

The affected products may be contaminated by the bacteria Salmonella. This was discovered after a routine sampling result showed that some samples tested positive for the Salmonella bacteria.

The following six products, along with their specifications, are affected by the recall:

The products are packaged in plastic cube retail packs.

In bulk, the product is packed in 18-inch by 11-inch waxed cartons made of cardboard. The code indicated on the packaging is code 397. It is sold in 5 lbs. per bulk.  Salmonella is one of the most harmful pathogens that can infect people.

Salmonella infections can cause high fever, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea (bloody in some cases) and vomiting. In people with weak immunities, a Salmonella infection can even cause death.

Currently, there have been no related health incidences that have been reported.

The affected products have been distributed in different retail stores, specifically A&P, Stop & Shop, Hannaford, Foodmaster, Roche Brothers, Grand Union, Shaws, Donnelans and Truccis.

The affected alfalfa sprouts were distributed in New England, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Customers who bought the recalled alfalfa sprouts are advised to either discard them or return them to the store for a refund. They may also call Jonathan’s Sprouts at 508-763-2577 for any recall related concerns.
