Hygaard Fine Foods, together with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), has announced a recall on specific batches of sandwiches. The sandwiches are believed to be contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled product is sold in the market as “Hygaard Mini Sub Sandwiches.” The sandwiches are sold in 130-gram packs, having a UPC code of 065504493062. The “best before” date indicated on the product is October 21. The affected sandwiches were been distributed to the areas of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Nunavut, Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec, and the Yukon territories.

Food that is contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can cause a serious case of food poisoning. For people who have weak immune systems, like the elderly and children, poisoning caused by the bacteria can lead to death. For pregnant women, poisoning caused by these bacteria can lead to stillbirths or miscarriages. For healthier people, food poisoning caused by Listeria monocytogenes causes high fever, stiff neck, severe headache and nausea. Currently however, there have been no reports of food poisoning that is connected to the affected sandwich products.

Hygaard Fine Foods, the manufacturer of the sandwiches, is currently implementing the recall and notifying retailers to remove the affected product from their displays. The CFIA on the other hand, is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall. Consumers are advised not to consume the product, and instead dispose of it, or return it to their store of purchase.

Consumers who have concerns about the recalled product can call Hygaard’s hotline at 780-467-4050. They can also call CFIA’s hotline at 1-800-442-2342.
