Cold Smoked Sprats and Schmaltz Herring D and M Smoked Fish Incorporated announced a product recall on its schmaltz herring, as well as its cold smoked sprats products. Both products are packed under the Haifa brand. The reason for the recall is that both were found to contain un-eviscerated fish.

The recalled schmaltz herring has a lot code of 51, while the smoked sprats are under lot code 54. The schmaltz herring were packed with brine (salt) in plastic white pales. These were either on the 27th of February or afterward. Areas and retail stores where the product was distributed are Ester Deli in Brooklyn, New York; R and M Supermarket in Flushing, New York and Royal Seafood in Brooklyn, New York.

The recalled smoked sprats were in bulk containers and were distributed in Ester Deli in Brooklyn, New York; Gold Label in Brooklyn, New York and Gourmet Boutique in Brooklyn, New York.

The product recall was made after New York State Agriculture & Market Food inspectors did a routine sampling and discovered that the products had not been properly eviscerated. The sale of un-eviscerated products is prohibited as it may cause serious health risks. Un-eviscerated fish may contain Clostridium botulin which causes Botulism. Botulism in its most serious case can cause death.

No related illnesses have been reported currently. Consumers who were able to buy the recalled products are advised to return it to the store. They are strongly advised not to eat it, even if it does not smell rancid or look spoiled. They may also call D and M at 718-523-8899 for any related concerns.
