On February 3, American Spoon Foods announced a voluntary recall on three of its products, Salsa (Apple Chipotle), Grilling Sauce (Maple Barbecue) and Roasting Sauce (Pumpkin Chipotle). The reason for the recall is the possibility of undeclared wheat in its ingredients, a common food allergen.
The affected products have the following information:
Apple Chipotle Salsa – net weight of 13.5 ounces and having a UPC code of 019363016047.
Maple Barbecue Grilling Sauce – with a net weight of 15 ounces and a UPC code of 019363014371.
Pumpkin Chipotle Roasting Sauce – net weight 14 ounces and having a UPC code of 019363014173.
All three recalled products are in lot codes: 0002 to 0365, 1002 to 1034 and 9301 to 9363. All products are contained in glass jars. The information can be found on the back of the jars.
Wheat as an allergen can cause serious allergy attacks to those who are hypersensitive to it. Symptoms of allergy attack include rashes, facial or lip swelling and difficulty in breathing. At the time of the recall, no allergy attacks or other health conditions had been reported that were linked to the products.
The recalled salsa and sauces have been distributed to various specialty retail stores in Florida, Indiana, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Washington, Arkansas, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, Utah and Wisconsin.
American Spoon Foods has suspended production of these products and retailers have been informed of the recall. Customers who have bought these products need to take note of the lot codes (for future reference), especially if they have known allergies to wheat. They can also call the company’s consumer services department at 800-222-5886, ext. 3003 and ask for Justin Rashid. The department is open from Monday until Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. They can also send an email at info@spoon.com.
