Raley’s and the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) reached a provisional agreement that ended a 9-day strike.
The tentative agreement won’t be publicized until ratification is done by the union’s members. The negotiations have been ongoing for 15 months. The management of Raley’s said that the contract provided the company with cost savings, which will be useful in funding initiatives that will make the supermarket chain competitive. The voting that will ratify the agreement will be conducted soon, according to UFCW. The management at the supermarket chain said that many groups of people suffered during the dispute and that it will be a good thing for work to resume normally.
Raley’s is a supermarket chain operating 128 locations in Nevada and northern California. The chain operates with four banners, which are Raley’s, Food Source, Nob Hill Foods and Bel Air. The Bel Air stores did not participated in the strike, but will also benefit from the agreement.
Other beneficiaries include the union members of Union Food and Commercial Workers local 5 and 8 in central California. The strike had involved the Nob Hill location and Raley’s. The picket lines that had gone up during the nine-day strike will be coming down.
Previously, union statements called for the strikes against Raley’s beginning midnight November 4th. The talks had stalled, but resumed later. The union officials at the time had said that picket lines would remain up until the labor dispute was worked out. The management at Raley’s had shown optimism that an agreement would be reached that would be equitable and fair to all parties concerned. The details of the agreement will be made public after ratification.
