A Fairway store that was badly damaged by floods brought on by Hurricane Sandy is set to reopen its doors soon, according to the store’s general manager.  Andy Zuleta said that it would reopen hopefully in the next 6-8 weeks and will be “better than ever and more customer friendly.” In a video posted on the net, Zuleta is seen touring the store’s floors, which are empty save for a coffee roaster and commercial drying equipment.

Howard Glickberg, Fairway Market’s founder, posted a video this week and gave the time frame for the reopening of the Brooklyn Red Hook store. The store, which is right next to the waterfront at the New York Harbor, was flooded by over 4 feet of gushing water during Sandy’s peak last month. Most of the store’s equipment, merchandise and fixtures were badly destroyed in the aftermath of the storm. The store is located in a coffee warehouse with a 150-year-old history.

Hurricane Sandy caused heavy damage late last month and caused the delay in many store openings. Power outages forced some stores to remain closed as the hurricane’s power was felt all over the country. Fairway Markets was one of the affected chains with at least five stores remaining closed at some time during the storm. The stores had experienced difficulty in workers reporting to their workstations, which partly caused the closures. The chain had to give shuttle services to its workers.

Other supermarkets in areas such as New York and New Jersey with temporary closures included as ShopRite, Whole Foods Market, Save-A-Lot and Wakefern, among others.
