Unilever announced a limited product recall on Skippy (Reduced Fat Super Chunk, as well as Reduced Fat) peanut butter. The reason for the product recall is the possibility of bacterial contamination, specifically Salmonella contamination, in some of these finished products.
The product at risk is packed in plastic jars with a product weight of 16.3 ounces, with the following UPCs: 048001006782 and 048001006812 (the UPC is located on the label’s side, underneath the bar code). The affected products have the following best before dates: MAY1612LR1, MAY2112LR1, MAY1712LR1, MAY2012LR1, MAY1812LR1 and MAY1912LR1 (this can be found on the jar’s lid).
Salmonella is a bacterium which can cause serious health risks and sometime even fatal infections to children and people with weak immune systems. Salmonella infections are characterized by diarrhea (in some cases bloody diarrhea), nausea, fever, and abdominal pain and vomiting. In some cases, salmonella can infiltrate the bloodstream, causing more serious infections (such as infected aneurysms), arthritis or endocarditis (inflammation of the inner layer of the heart).
No infections connected to this recall were reported. The limited product recall was company initiated, as their regular sampling program returned positive results and revealed that the finished products might contain the salmonella bacteria. Consumers who have bought the product with the reported UPCs are advised to dispose of the product and contact Unilever in order to be given a replacement voucher or coupon.
Customers can call the Company at 800 453 3432. A customer representative is available at all hours to answer concerns and inquiries regarding the recall. A representative for consumer services is also available for assistance from Monday to Friday, between 8:30 am to 6:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.
