Splendid Products based in Burlingame, California has issued a voluntary recall of its Daniella brand mangoes due to a possible salmonella contamination. This has been done as a precautionary measure following over 100 reported infections in California alone.
The mangoes are also linked to recent illnesses in Canada, which has also led the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to give warnings on the same brand of mangoes. The mangoes were grown in Mexico and distributed to stores between July 12 and August 31, 2012. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US has also released mango recalls. In Canada, more than 20 people were reported to have been made ill by the mangoes.
The sticker PLU numbers on the recalled mangoes are 3114, 4051, 4311, 4584 or 4959. The 4959 batch are said to be the ones imported to Canada by the importer, North American Produce Sales of Vancouver, which has also joined in the recall of the fruit. Salmonella bacteria may cause salmonellosis a form of gastroenteritis that may cause high fever, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain and headaches. For young children and elderly people it can cause deadly infections especially where one’s immune system is weak.
Also affected are products by manufacturers that may have used the Daniella brand mangoes for cut fruit and salsa products by World Food in Florida, Winn-Dixie Cut Fruit Produced by Renaissance Food Group and Pacific Coast Fruit Company Deli Style Fruit Salads and Taylor Farms Wawa Products. Individual stores such as Stop ‘N’ Shop, and BI-LO have also recalled the mangoes.
The affected mangoes that are facing the recall are between 800,000 to 1 million in number as Splendid Products says that the 100,000 boxes contained 8 to 10 mangoes each.
