Definition: Grocery is commonly known as the business or premises of a grocer; the person who deals in foods, meats, produce, dairy products, household supplies and staples. The term Grocery was first used in the mid 15th century referring to buying and selling in “gross” or in wholesale.

Etymology: grocery, from the middle of the 15th century it reffered to the “goods sold by a grocer”. Eearlier, in the middle of the 14th century, the Ancient Guild of Pepperers founded a fraternity which, in 1376, became The Company of Grocers of London and now the Grocer’s Hall in London.

Grocery in the USA: Since 1828 the term grocery means “a grocer’s shop”. A&P, U.S. grocery chain, originally The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, founded 1859 by George Huntington Hartford and George Gilman. ACME, U.S. grocery store chain was founded 1891 in Philadelphia. The self-service grocery store started at around in 1913 when a Montana firm copyrighted the word groceteria (as in cafeteria)
