Retail giant Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. is recalling several batches of LEASA-branded sprouts due to a possible bacterial contamination. The products are believed to be contaminated with harmful bacteria Salmonella.

Salmonella is one of the harmful bacteria that can contaminate food. This bacteria is the cause of a kind of food poisoning known as Salmonellosis. Common symptoms of this infection include high fever, severe headache, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes bloody diarrhea. In frail people or those that already have existing medical conditions, a salmonella infection can be potentially fatal. Although there have been no  reports of medical emergencies related to these LEASA-branded sprouts, Winn-Dixie is implementing the recall out of caution, in order to keep consumers from being harmed because of the potentially-contaminated products.

Specific information about the recalled products are the following:

Gourmet Sprouts/6 ounces/7546555633

Spicy Sprouts/6 ounces/ 7546555635

Onion Sprouts/6 ounces/7546555634

All affected LEASA sprouts are those sold from January 7, 2012 to January 16, 2012. These products have expiration dates of between Feb 1 to Mar 15 2012. The products were sold in Winn-Dixie stores in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi.

Winn-Dixie encourages people who might have the recalled sprouts in their possession to discard it immediately. They can also choose to return the recalled product to any Winn-Dixie store nearby in order to be given a refund. In order to be given a refund, customers must be able to present their proof of purchase which could either be a receipt or the packaging label of the product.
