California-based food company Kradjian Imp Co. is recalling about 231 cases of its cheese products due to a possible listeria monocytogenes infection. The problem was found by the company’s supplier, which then notified Kradjian Imp about the possible bacterial contamination.

Each case contains 16-ounce packs of Tresse Cheese and 16-ounce packs of Shinglish Cheese, all sold under the Cedar brand. Both of these cheese products are unripe cheese and were delivered prior to November 13, 2011. Affected UPC codes are 78546 10000 and 78546 01000. These cheese products were produced by Fromagerie Marie Kade, a food manufacturing company based in Canada. Both cheese products are vacuum-packed, with the packaging featuring a picture of a cedar tree. The recalled cheese products have been distributed to different retailers in the area of Southern California, especially in markets that specialize in Mediterranean food.

Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful food contaminant. This bacterium causes a type of food poisoning known as Listeriosis. In healthy people, common symptoms of Listeriosis include fever, stiffness, stomach pains, severe headache, nausea and diarrhea. In pregnant women, Listeriosis can cause them to miscarry or have premature births. In children or elderly people, Listeriosis can become more serious medical emergencies. To date, there have been no reports of infection that is related to the affected cheese products.

Kradjian Imp is advising consumers who may have bought the recalled Cedar Tresse Cheese or Shinglish Cheese not to consume the product. Consumers should either dispose of it, or return it to the store where it was bought. For questions or concerns about the product, consumers can call Kradjian Imp at its hotline, 1-866-825-2633. The hotline is open from 9 AM-5 PM (weekdays only, except holidays).
