Washington-based Trans-Ocean Products Inc. has announced that it is recalling specific lots of its smoked salmon due to possible bacterial contamination. The affected product, “Trans-Ocean Wild Alaska Sockeye Smoked Salmon,” may be contaminated by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.

The product’s manufacturer reported the potential contamination. The smoked salmon was not produced by Trans-Ocean and thus no other Trans-Ocean products are not affected by the recall. The recalled smoked salmon has been distributed to the following retail chains: Giant Eagle (West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland) and Demoulas Marketbasket (New Hampshire and Massachusetts).

The affected product has a net weight of 4 ounces and have lot numbers 1280W and 1293W. The smoked salmon is vacuum-packed in a plastic pouch(green and white in color) and has the label “transOCEAN” printed on it. The product’s lot number is printed on the packaging’s back panel, on the right-hand side.

Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacterial food contaminant. Infection caused by this bacterium is called Listeriosis. Common symptoms of this infection include high fever, stiffness, abdominal pain, severe headache, nausea, and diarrhea. Serious medical emergencies include miscarriages or stillbirths in pregnant women. Listeriosis can also cause death in new born babies. To date, no illness or medical emergency has been reported that is linked to this recalled product.

Consumers who bought the recalled smoked salmon are urged to dispose of it or return it to the store where it was purchased. They may also call Trans-Ocean Products at 1-800-290-2722. The hotline is open from 6 AM-5 PM, Pacific Standard Time.
