Provigo is a Canadian chain of supermarkets that is a subsidiary of Loblaws Company’s, Ltd. Like its sister grocery chains, Provigo’s headquarters is in Ontario, Canada.

History
Provigo was founded in 1969 as the Couvrette and Provost Group. Business partners Antoine Turmel, Jean-Louis Lamontage, René Provost and J-Arthur Tremblay founded the company. The four wholesalers founded the new company in order to provide excellent food, as well as customer service, to consumers in Canada. It was only a year after they established the company that they named it Provigo.

The owners of Provigo decided that they would diversify the company’s operations. They then launched an operation in retail sales, which resulted in the creation of three new food banners: Provigain, Provipop and Provibec. When the businesses bloomed, the owners decided to acquire several supermarkets located inQuebec. Some of these acquired retailers include Jato (acquired in 1975), Dionne (acquired in 1977) and Steinberg (acquired in 1992).

In 1979, the Provigo name became more well known in Quebec because several of the supermarkets in the area were under Provigo’s banner. This caused the company’s banner to become rapidly popular in addition to the stores providing good quality service and commitment to its merchants.

After several years, the company was acquired by Loblaw Companies, Limited and under this new ownership, the Provigo banner has been rejuvenated. Despite being under a new owner, Provigo remains committed to its customers. Its goals have always remained the same, and that is to provide freshness, quality and variety to its customers in all of its stores.

Provigo’s merchants are also committed to making its customers’ life easier by providing service that is quick and yet courteous. The merchants are also closely involved with Provigo’s activities, like supporting a number of fundraising activities, as well as giving assistance to the Children’s Charity named after Loblaws personal banner President’s Choice®. This particular charity aims to give financial assistance to families who have developmentally or physically challenged children.

Currently, there are about 110 Provigo stores all over the country. The company employs a total of over 5,700 employees in all of these stores. All Provigo stores are open to serve customers everyday, from weekdays to weekends.
