David Sands Ltd. is a chain of convenience stores based in Scotland. The company has its head office in the county of Kinross, Scotland.
History
According to records, David Sands Ltd. was founded in the early part of the 19th century. Its founder, Joseph Hardie, was a well-known businessman who also established the Free Church of Kinross.
In 1846, the business was passed to David Sands, his nephew. Sands was capable of handling the business, as he was trained to be a grocer, as well as in related trades. By 1881, the business was a prosperous one and upon Sand’s death, management was taken over by his three sons: Joseph, John and David Hardie.
In the 20th century, the Kinross store underwent a number of transformations. It was converted to a self-service store in 1960 and six years after, the company added a car park at the store, which was considered a major store improvement in those days. In the succeeding years, the company bought an outlet in Glenfarg, together with a number of travelling shops. In 1966, the company sold the travelling shops and the Glenfarg shop for the reason that the area of retail was rapidly changing. In the same year, David’s son Davee Sands took over management of the company.
The company decided to expand and fully-modernize the Kinross store to adapt to the changing retail industry. The Kinross store was also one of the pioneers of being open seven days in a week and open late in the day. In the 1980’s, the Kinross store was considered to be one of the busiest stores in Scotland. In 1989, the company again bought a second store, one that was located in Methilhill.
In the past twenty years, the company was able to acquire a total of 26 stores, a head office (with an area of 28,000 square feet) and a new main warehouse. Today, David Sands is considered a leader in the area of retailing in Scotland. Despite the company’s success, it has plans for expansion. They are still improving the stores for the customers’ convenience. Today, David Sands has more than 25 stores all over Scotland, from the high streets of Auchtermuchty to the main streets of Thornton.
