Tillamook County Creamery Association is a dairy cooperative located in Oregon, USA, that produces various types of dairy products.
History
Tillamook County Creamery Association was founded more than a century ago in 1909, when a number of small creameries agreed to form a cooperative to maintain and preserve the reputation and quality of cheese in the area.
With the cooperative created, the members were soon able to produce new products in addition to cheeses. TCCA continued to prosper and was able to market its products not only in Tillamook County, but also in Portland, Oregon and even to the city of Portland, Maine.
In 1921, Tillamook became an officially copyrighted brand and the cooperative marketed its products under the slogan “Look for the Tillamook on the Rind.” In 1949, the cooperative completed a new cheese facility, its second in Oregon (one in Boardman and one in Tillamook County).
In 2009, TCCA celebrated its 100th year as a cooperative. A year after, Tillamook® Cheddar Cheese was given recognition for being voted the “Best Medium Cheddar Cheese” in the world. Tillamook® is now considered the best brand of cheddar cheese in the western part of the country.
Today, TCCA is owned by about 130 farmer/members, some from Tillamook County. Most of the current members of the cooperative are family of the original members and those who helped establish it. Currently, TCCA is also known as Tillamook Cheese, primarily because the cooperative produces relatively more cheddar cheeses than other dairy products. Cheeses produced by the cooperative include Colby cheese, Pepper Jack, Swiss cheese, Monterey Jack, and Mozzarella. Aside from various cheeses, TCCA also produces butter, sour cream, ice cream and yogurt. The cooperative’s products are available in all parts of the country.
In January of 2011, TCCA introduced the Tillamook® Monterey Jack in stores. In February, TCCA expanded its yogurt product line and decreased its distribution operations in Arizona, Colorado and California. In March, the cooperative’s Monterey Jack was voted “America’s Best.”
Despite being in the business for more than a hundred years, the cooperative still continues to keep its commitment to its values: quality, integrity, responsiveness, cooperation and stewardship. Undoubtedly, this commitment is one of the biggest reasons why the cooperative has continued to do well in the industry after being in existence for over a century.
