Friesland Campina is a major Dutch dairy cooperative formed from the merger of Campina GmbH and Royal Friesland Foods. The cooperative has operations worldwide, including the United States.

History

Royal Friesland Campina traces its roots to as early as 1879. Over the years, the company has grown because of several takeovers and mergers.

In the later part of 1997, Friesland Coberco Dairy Food was formed with the merger of four Dutch dairy cooperatives. The cooperative’s name then became Friesland Coberco Dairy Food, or FCDF. In June of 2004, the Netherlands’ Queen Beatrix granted FCDF royal status. When this occurred, the cooperative changed its name to Royal Friesland Foods.

Campina was founded in 1989 as a result of the merger of regional cooperatives DMV Campina and Melkunie Holland. After the merger was completed, the new cooperative’s name became Campina Melkunie. In 2001 however, the Melkunie part was taken out and the cooperative plainly became Campina.

In December of 2007, Friesland Foods and Campina announced its plans for a merger. The EU had no objections other than the condition that the cooperative would sell dairy drinks and certain cheeses. Not long after, the two cooperatives merged and started to expand worldwide with its acquisitions. Among the companies that the cooperative has acquired include Deltown Specialties in the United States, Menken Dairy Food in the Netherlands and Parmalat Thailand in Thailand.

In the United States, Friesland Campina has activities in five different locations throughout the country. The cooperative’s activities are primarily focused on the production and marketing of a variety of dairy ingredients. In the United States, the cooperative’s operating company is known as Friesland Campina Domo. Its U.S. manufacturing facility is located in Delhi, in the state of New York, while its sales facilities are located in Chicago, Illinois and Paramus, New Jersey.

The products manufactured in the Delhi facility are ingredients for use in the production of infant nutrition products, sport foods, medical nutrition products and cellular nutrition products. The company’s operations department is located in Batavia, New York. This headquarters shares a production plant with partner and dairy producer O-At-Ka.
