Hormel FoodsHormel Foods Corporation is a worldwide leader in the processed food industry and is best known as the company that produces SPAM. The company has its headquarters in Austin, Minnesota.

History
The company’s history began when George Hormel founded Geo. A. Hormel & Company in 1891. After establishing his company, Hormel then built its first meatpacking facility near Austin, Minnesota.

In three years’ time, he added a two-story building just behind the company’s meatpacking facility. In the 1890s, products made from fresh pork were so in demand that Hormel set up a sales branch of his company in Minneapolis. In the succeeding years, Hormel continued to expand as it added branches and distribution centers in different cities such as Chicago, Illinois, Dallas, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1917, Hormel started exporting its products. This was so successful that the sales from its exports accounted for about thirty percent of the total company’s sales. By 1924, the company was already processing over one million hogs every year at its Austin facility.

In 1926, the company introduced an innovation by launching its canned ham. In 1928, the company established its California manufacturing facility, which was created to produce the company’s branded products. Five years after, Hormel already had distribution centers set up across the United States in 14 cities.

Under the leadership of George Hormel’s son, Jay, the company was able to launch a number of new products, which included Hormel® Chili and Dinty Moore® Beef Stew. In 1937, SPAM®, which would later become popular worldwide, was introduced by Hormel.

By 1959, Hormel had already produced 1 billion cans of SPAM® and Hormel again introduced a new product to the market, the Little Sizzlers® Pork Sausage. Four years after, another Hormel product was introduced to the market, the Cure81® Ham.

From the 1970s to the 1980s, Hormel went into more expansion as it completed a number of manufacturing facilities in the country. In 1986, it was able to acquire Jennie-O Foods, a private company that produced processed turkey. A year after, Hormel was given recognition for being the company with the most new products introduced. The recognition was given by Prepared Foods Publication.

In 1993, Geo. A. Hormel and Company officially became Hormel Foods Corporation. In 2008, the company again introduced a new product, a microwaveable meal labeled Hormel® Compleats®. Other products that debuted were Chi-Chi’s® Fiesta Plates™ and Hormel® Pepperoni Minis (both products introduced in 2009).

Currently, Hormel Foods Corporation has continued to perform admirably and has maintained its position of strength in the area of processed food products. Since its inception, Hormel has been continually committed in providing its consumers worldwide with high-quality, flavorful and nutritious products
