Blue Sky Creamery is most popularly known for its Nitro Ice Cream. The company has a number of ice cream shops and mobile operations in different parts of the country.

History
Blue Sky Creamery was created by founders William Schroeder and Thomas Paskach in 2000. Prior to the company’s foundation, the two were responsible for an innovation in the area of ice cream making, the nitro flash freezing.

A year after Paskach and Schroeder made their breakthrough, the two then started their company and applied for a patent for their nitro-freezing process and equipment. They also presented a prototype of their equipment at the 2000 state fair in Iowa.

When nitro ice cream was first introduced to the market, it became an instant success, mainly because it was something new and intriguing to consumers. A lot of people wanted to try it at least once. However, the ice cream’s incredible flavor and texture made them come back for more, which is why Nitro ice cream became instantly popular.

What made Blue Sky’s ice cream different from the conventional ones is that with nitrogen freezing, ice cream freezes instantly, in less than a second. This results in the formation of smaller ice crystals, resulting in a smoother texture.

In 2001, the two founders again created a second prototype and successfully demonstrated it at the Iowa, Clay County and Tulsa State Fairs. The second prototype’s improvements were in terms of its reliability, product quality and ease of use. A year after, the company put up its first retail shop and named it Blue Sky Creamery. It was situated at Ankeny, Iowa. The company then focused on the creation of a new Nitro-freezing machine, which they named NF-3500. When the machines were tested, the company then began marketing it at the IAAPA Trade Show in Florida in November of 2002.

Two years after, the franchise concept of Blue Sky Creamery was introduced and its first franchise store was opened in the state of Minnesota. Since then, more Blue Sky Creamery shops have opened in St. Louis, Missouri and West Des Moines, Iowa.

From 2008 to 2009, Blue Sky Creamery introduced mobile operations where mobile stores of Blue Sky Creamery ice creams go to different events to market the product. Since the operation has expanded , the company started to offer franchise opportunities for its mobile operations. Currently, mobile franchises are being given in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Eastern Iowa and Oregon.

To further extend the company’s scope, Blue Sky Creamery launched its own website which allows customers to order their ice cream products online.
