Metamucil is a product in the Procter and Gamble line of health products, a bulk-producing laxative and fiber supplement, basically composed of psyllium seed husks, which can also reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels, aid in digestive processes, and reduce heart problems.
The Metamucil brand was first produced in 1934 by the G. D. Searle & Company in Nebraska, and in 1985 it was purchased by Procter & Gamble. Metamucil is in Procter and Gamble’s personal health category, along with Pepto-Bismol, Prilosec and Vicks. Because Metamucil is composed of 100% psyllium seed husks (a herbaceous plant grown in Asia and India) it is recommended by doctors and gastroenterologists for it superior viscous fiber. This type of fiber is very beneficial to the digestive tract, forming a gel-like solution that travels through the entire digestive track and “cleans” away waste products without dissolving. While removing waste from the gastrointestinal track, Metamucil traps carbohydrates in the body and creates a “full” feeling; this certainly aids in weight control programs. Metamucil offers the daily 7 grams of fiber recommended by doctors to patients to keep their digestive systems regular. In 2009, Metamucil was also approved by the FDA to add “lowers blood sugar levels” to its growing list of benefits.
Metamucil is available in the following forms: powders (both regular and sugar free) in 5 flavors, which include Orange, Berry, and Pink Lemonade; single packets, very convenient for travel; capsules, with or without calcium added; and gluten-free wafers, in cinnamon spice or apple crisp flavors. Clear and Natural variety was discontinued in 2010, since it was not 100% psyllium fiber. The most recent commercials feature a ‘”The Big Orange Blob” that rolls through parks, picking up items, represents the ability of Metamucil to “clean things up.”
Metamucil holds a 30% market share in the dietary fiber supplement market, with sales of $88.5 million in 2011. This market will certainly grow as more and more consumers look for proven aids in maintaining a healthy life style.
