San Pellegrino or S. Pellegrino is a brand of bottled, sparkling mineral water currently owned by Nestlé Company.
San Pellegrino is bottled in Lombardy, Italy, at San Pellegrino Terme, a small commune-like town. The water contains a high amount of carbon dioxide, making it naturally effervescent. The water is also highly mineralized, containing calcium, chloride, fluorine, lithium, magnesium, nitrogen, potassium, silicon, sodium and naturally occurring strontium of at least 100 micrograms per liter. The water travels through limestone and volcanic rock where it picks up minerals and carbonation. Water that is naturally carbonated has always been highly sought after for its purported curative properties.
This is one of the first naturally carbonated waters to be bottled and distributed throughout Europe and it is believed that Leonardo da Vinci visited the town to sample the waters. The earliest records of bottling and distribution are from 1899. By 1908, San Pellegrino was being exported around Europe and as far away as Cairo, Shanghai, Sydney, Peru, Brazil and the U.S.
In 1932, an orangeade was created by adding orange juice concentrate to the water. Modern flavors also include bitters, lemon, orange, blood orange, grapefruit, and chinotto orange. The company continued growing and in 1988, it became the first mineral water in France to be imported from Italy.
Nestlé bought San Pellegrino in 1997 and it continues its reputation as a premiere sparkling mineral water. The water is desired by four-star restaurants for its unique taste and quality.
