The company Thomas Produce of Florida announced a product recall for their jalapeno peppers last March 18. The recall was due to the possibility of bacterial infection on the product, particularly by the Salmonella bacteria.
The recall was made after some of the products tested positive for Salmonella during a routine sampling made by the FDA. Thomas Produce has currently stopped producing and distributing jalapeno peppers just until the company and the FDA conclude the investigation that is being done about the possible cause for bacterial contamination.
The recalled product was distributed and sold from February 15 to February 18. The whole green peppers were contained in generic bushel cardboard boxes of about 1 1/9 bushel size. The label on the box includes the product’s lot code, which is 1054811HJBT. The product recall is limited to this specific lot only.
Salmonella is one of the most harmful bacteria that can infect humans. Common symptoms of infection include vomiting, fever, nausea, sometimes-bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps and headache. In some cases, Salmonella can infiltrate the bloodstream and cause more serious health risks such as aneurysms and endocarditis. In worst cases, Salmonella can cause death, especially in people with weakened immune systems.
At the time of the recall, no health incidences that were related to the recalled jalapeno peppers have been reported.
The recalled peppers were distributed and sold in different retail grocery stores and markets in Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, North Carolina and Minnesota.
Customers who have questions and concerns regarding the recalled product can call Thomas Produce at 1 561-482-1111 from Monday until Friday, 9 AM until 4:30 PM Pacific Standard Time.
