According to a study presented in the British Journal of Medicine, consumption of fruit is a means of lowering diabetes risk. Drinking fruit juices on the other hand, can increase the risk of diabetes. The most effective fruits have been found to be blueberries, which cut diabetes risk by about 26%. This is unlike other fruits where three servings of each fruit cut the risk by 2%. The study published in the Journal accounted for the dietary behavior of about 187,000 American citizens over 25 years. Other fruits that proved to be effective in minimizing risk include grapes, pears, raisins, and apples. The lowered risk was attributed to the high anthocyanin levels in fruits. Anthocyanin enhances the rate of glucose uptake.

There is a third diabetes type referred to as gestational diabetes, which mainly affects expectant mothers. Type 1 diabetes is hereditary, while type 2 is mainly caused by obesity and other factors related to lifestyle. Diet and lifestyle change are the surest routes to dealing with diabetes.
