According to a recent study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, consumption of a Mediterranean diet greatly reduces the chances of hot flashes and night sweats at menopause. Data was collected from about 6,000 women between the ages of 50 and 55 to access the relationship between women’s health and their natural menopause. The researchers studied their diet and menopausal symptoms at the beginning of the study and followed up at the end of nine years.
During the start of the study, about 58% of the participants showed that they experienced night sweats and hot flashes. From this point the women who followed a strict Mediterranean diet showed that they were about 20% less likely to develop hot flashes after accounting for most of the other lifestyle habits. A Mediterranean diet in this case includes strawberries, pineapples, melons, salad, pasta, garlic, greens, and red wine. The women who took high sugar and high fat diets showed that they were about 23% more likely to experience menopausal symptoms.
The study proves that the consumption of fruits decreases the chances of experiencing vasomotor menopausal symptoms. Consumption of high fat and high sugar foods increases the chances of VMS. This should increase the need to have a change of dietary habits to prevent these symptoms. Though the study does not give any proof of whether the consumption of certain foods prevents the trigger of hot flashes, the study is one of the first in the world to tie general dietary patterns to menopause. You should therefore, try to shop smarter. This study should be treated like healthy living advice. Shop for those green and fresh Mediterranean foods and enjoy the numerous benefits that they promise.
