History
Reckitt and Benckiser was founded separately. Johann Benckiser started Benckiser in 1823 while Isaac Reckitt started his business in 1848. Benckiser focused on the area of industrial chemicals while Reckitt started from the starch business and later diversified into various household consumer products.

In 1886, Reckitt and Sons began its expansion when it opened its business to the Australian market. In 1888, the company entered the Stock Exchange of London. In 1913, Reckitt and Sons went into a joint venture with J&J Colman to open its business in North America. The joint venture was so successful that they extended it in 1921 in order to take charge of all operations that were outside of the United Kingdom.

In 1938, Reckitt and Sons merged with J&J Colman and thus became Reckitt and Colman Ltd. By 1954, Reckitt & Colman again went into a merger, this time with the Chiswick Company.

In 1956, Benckiser diversified into industrial cleaning and consumer goods. It also launched Calgon (a water softener) within the year. In 1964 and 1968 respectively, it introduced Calgonit and Quanto to the market.

By 1982, Benckiser was still continuing its expansion through various acquisitions, as well as divestitures. It bought the spa businesses Panigal and Mira Lanza in Italy in 1988 and S.A. Camp Company in Spain the next year.

Meanwhile, Reckitt & Colman bought Airwick Products in 1985 and Boyle-Midway in 1990. The two companies continued to expand its business worldwide by several more acquisitions and divestitures. Finally in 1999, Benckiser and Reckitt and Colman went into a merger and is now known as Reckitt Benckiser.

Reckitt Benckiser still continued to expand to other international markets. Currently, it has subsidiaries in countries from Argentina to Zambia. As for the U.S. subsidiary of Reckitt Benckiser, the company is still a major competitor in producing and marketing household, food and cleaning products for the North American markets.
