History
Johnson & Johnson was founded by Edward Mead Johnson, Robert Wood Johnson and James Wood Johnson in 1886. The company was first opened in New Brunswick, New Jersey. It published the first book on antiseptic treatment and wound care and made available the first commercially produced first aid kit in 1888. In 1894, the company introduced baby powder and maternity kits, which became very popular products. In 1896, the first sanitary napkin products were introduced. By 1898, the company started making affordable dental floss. It also helped the Texas hurricane victims in 1900. The following year, it published first aid manuals. In 1906, the company also helped victims of San Francisco earthquake. James Wood Johnson managed the company from 1910 to 1932.

Johnson & Johnson introduced BAND-AID in 1921. Over the next few years, the company expanded its business to other countries such as the UK, Mexico, South Africa and Australia. In 1932, the son of Robert Wood Johnson started managing the company. By 1937, the company reached Argentina and Brazil. The medical diagnostic division was started in 1944.

Johnson’s ‘No More Tears’ Baby Shampoo was introduced in 1954. The company opened a plant in India in 1957. In 1959 Johnson & Johnson buys McNeil Laboratories in the U.S., taking over the first children’s non-aspirin pain and fever reliever, Tylenol. In 1963, Philip B. Hofmann was elected as CEO of the company and under his direction the company develops new treatments for family planning, personal care and schizophrenia. During the period from 1976 to 1989, the company expanded its business to Egypt and China.

The eye care division introduces ACUVUE contact lenses in 1987. Over the next few years, the company expanded to Eastern Europe and Russia. The first form of coronary stent was invented in 1994 and this was a revolution in the field of cardiac surgery. In 2002 the company purchases Tibotec-Virco BVBA in order to tackle the needs of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis patients. By 2011, Johnson & Johnson completed 125 years in health care services.
